Re: Embarrassing Confessions of Urbanists

Since I've moved to the Central Corridor, I find myself taking the 16 on a regular basis because I don't want to walk the two blocks to the Green Line station and the 16 gets closer to my destination anyways.

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

So are they also proposing a 40% cut to all the outstate and suburban transit agencies as well? (Based on the map and what I've heard, the suburban transit agencies are getting no cut and, in fact, a small increase in funding.) It frustrates me to no end. I don't mind having money funnel outstate to...

Re: Star Tribune

I got 52 weeks of digital-only for $30 at the State Fair last year, and they threw in a free picnic cooler as well (could have also chosen a $10 Target card or an umbrella.) I also got a Groupon last year for 52 weeks of Sunday print only for $26, but I haven't seen that since. The state fair often ...

Re: Metro Transit fares

The local off-peak pass is jumping much higher than the rest of the passes, especially on a percentage basis. It does make sense to try and bridge the gap between the two fare passes (right now it's almost universally cheaper to just get the $59 and pay the difference in stored value each rush hour)...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

I'm not sure how much work the Green/Blue Line interlocking needs, but if work is being done there going to US Bank wouldn't be feasible. That being said, it would be nice to at least be able to push through to West Bank and connect to more buses at East and West Bank stations. As for overnight work...

Re: Suburban Malls and Associated Retail News

The Brainerd one is probably the oddest (along with the Detroit Lakes one staying open,) but it probably makes sense in the competitive landscape overall. Brainerd has a lot of other stores already that JCP is competing against, and rent may also be higher than normal. Both of these may result in lo...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

I think there's more concern that the Blue Line Extension won't happen if it's cut. I would think SWLRT would be sped up enough to get the agreement in place before the cut to the program, should it happen. That being said, more money for aBRT would be a not-terrible side effect of losing federal ma...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

Well and it's not just commuting costs that could be a factor, but also: [...] home/yard maintenance costs I personally think this is the biggest "forgotten" element of renting vs. owning. If I'm renting, I don't have to worry about finding the money to pay the repairman if the hot water ...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

I'm a bit curious how this will impact Northstar ridership, especially for special events. If someone's along the I-94 corridor or in much of greater Minnesota, it's not that much further to take 94 to 610 over to Brooklyn Park and use the (much more frequent) LRT line versus special event service a...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Just throwing this out there: how may of the changes are due to budgetary issues and how many may be due to issues with hiring drivers? I've seen Metro Transit push pretty hard to try and find new drivers, and there's been a few comments on Metro Transit's Facebook page indicating some buses not run...

Re: Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB)

I guess it would depend on how exactly "better" transit service is defined. If it's defined as "anything but Metro Mobility and Transit Link" I'd probably be okay with it, as would potentially "has every-30-minute service during midday or has a large park-and-ride in the cit...

It will be nice to not have to do the mile walk when vi...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Taking a look at the 2015 Fact Book for Metro Transit, it appears 24.8% of their revenue comes from fares. That's not much better, but it is still a fair amount better. The Met Council's is likely lower as it includes contracted routes and (probably more significantly) Metro Mobility and Transit Lin...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

I'm not against shifting from express fares to a nominal charge for parking, but unless we're wanting to make transit essentially useless for most people in suburbia, it would have to be nominal (perhaps $2/day) and covered with the Metropass/UPass. It would probably wind up being revenue neutral (t...

Re: Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB)

I believe a lot of the state general operating assistance comes from the state vehicle tax, of which "not less than 40%" must be used for public transit assistance per a Constitutional amendment. http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/hrd/pubs/ss/ssmvst.pdf So there's a chance any additional fun...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

I think part of the problem is that unless they hired additional Metro Transit police to check fares randomly, there'd be no way to easily enforce someone boarding through the back and not paying their fare. Frankly, I think a stricter stance on the "board in the front, exit in the rear" w...

It looks like it's just the Sunday print edition, though; no digital access is included. We subscribed for a year on the Groupon deal, although we may be able to "swap names" and use it again for our residence. EDIT: On the same delivery person, I'm not sure how it works in our area. They ...

Re: Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB)

Is there any major concern that either the Northstar or Red Line would go away, since most of their funding is from Anoka and Dakota County, respectively? Or do they seem committed to at least funding their portion of those two services?
