Re: Bloomington - General Topics

Looking at aerials from Google Earth and Hennepin County the building was demolished between 2006 and 2008.

For anyone curious here's Hennepin County's aerial photo website: https://hennepin.maps.arcgis.com/apps/w ... 75254b6cad

Re: Future Cars: Electric and Autonomous Vehicles

Well Elon Musk does have the mind of a 14-year old. :P

To me the Cybertruck looks like something out of a cyberpunk dystopia, and I sincerely hope the design doesn't catch on to other vehicles. Not that I think most vehicles today look much better than it.

I'm alright with it as long as trains get signal preemption through those crossings.

Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

It's also worth mentioning all the opt-outs are members of the Suburban Transit Association, which "is the legislative advocacy group assuring regional suburban transit needs are prioritized properly by elected leaders" (from their website: https://www.suburbantransitassociation.com/). On ...

Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

Considering that all the opt-outs are in the west metro (MVTA is kind of in the east metro, but most of their service is in the west metro), has any east metro suburb had an opt-out service or considered opting out of Metro Transit's service? The last thing we need is another opt-out, so I hope none...

Re: Green Line Extension - Southwest LRT

I forget if this has been brought up before, but as I biked on the trail through Hopkins and St. Louis Park a few days ago it seemed like the trail is an inch or two narrower than the old trail. Whether or not that's the case the multi-year long closure and construction could've/would've/should've b...

Re: Fantasy maps

Regional rail station concepts on Union Pacific's Montgomery Subdivision. A few years ago this rail line lost its biggest shipper, but freight trains still run on it, and Union Pacific hasn't shown any signs of abandoning this branch line. Abandonment or not, I hope someday regional rail is seriousl...

Re: Riverview Corridor Streetcar

With this evening's CAC meeting concluded here's some notes I took: One of the CAC members asked about the possibility of extending the Gold Line west to the airport and Mall of America as an alternative to the streetcar and aBRT options. One of the planners responded that the idea has been tossed a...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

Has there been any proposal to have any kind of rail their downtown in the past 30 years? Considering the debacle the Green and Blue Line extensions and Northstar have been, after Riverview is done are we going to have any more of some kind of rail anywhere in the metro in the next 30 years? Is a 3...

Re: Riverview Corridor Streetcar

Streetcar Option 1 looks the best to me. Most of the route has dedicated right-of-way plus center-running on West 7th should help with speed and reliability. My only hope is that later on they'll give the route dedicated right-of-way through downtown since I can't see mixed-traffic operation workin...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

In downtown Chaska a trail is being built under Chestnut Street on the former Union Pacific railroad right-of-way, so I guess it's pretty clear they have no interest in any kind of rail coming to their downtown. I'll keep myself from going into a full blown rant and just say it's shortsighted and di...

Re: Oslo, Norway (my home away from home)

I just looked at the map and noticed that the Oslo airport (unlike ours) is a sensible distance away from the city. That it is! But there's frequent and high-speed train service between Oslo and Gardermoen Airport as the airport has a station on the railway from Oslo to Lillehammer and Trondheim. F...

Re: MSP Airport / Metropolitan Airports Commission

I'm going a little into fantasy about this, but for many years I've thought it would be nice to start fresh with a Terminal 3 for all international arrivals and departures. This hypothetical T3 would have a sterile connection to the existing terminals, so if you're connecting to a flight at a differ...

Re: Transit Crime

For those of you supporting turnstiles I'd suggest using the subway systems in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. There's a thing called turnstile jumping, and it doesn't take long to witness this in those cities. Turnstiles just make it more difficult for people, especially those with disabiliti...

Re: Salt Lake City

I was just looking at their light rail system and was floored to learn they actually share track with a local freight company. Not really sure how that works, does anyone here have any experience with that? I’m guessing it’s like San Diego’s light rail. The route to the U.S.-Mexico border is also u...

Re: Oslo, Norway (my home away from home)

Since I visited Oslo last December and May I figured I’d post on changes I saw. The pedestrian/bike bridge across the Ring 3 motorway between Ullevål Stadium and the Sogn Student Village is complete. Much better than the old and narrow bridge where bikers and walkers had to share space. A little wes...
