Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

Something else that feels weird: the 61 bus not running at all on Sundays, but the 71 Bus does. I wish the 61 got more love and attention from metro transit!

Re: MSP to Rochester High Speed Rail

MSP - Rochester passenger rail/HSR is probably going to be deadish until there's more major MSP - Chicago investments. There's only so much Amtrak can do with $80B spread around the whole country. Unless the DFL were to get a trifecta and pass some real passenger rail funding in MN. They just don't ...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit

Every time I've brought up floating bus stops to local transit planners, there's some reason they think it's not a good idea. Same thing with far-side bus stops as the default. Now I can't remember why. I guess they would prefer conflict points between buses and cyclists over conflict points betwee...

It sounds like there's an assumption that at any of these things its always the same people? Because there was no gunfire at the one I was referring to. And I didn't mention anything about street racing. I haven't seen news about those shootings a month ago. So maybe that was a bad take? Shootings h...

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics

On July 4th I saw on a friend's snapchat story people shooting fireworks off and people doing donuts I think at Lake and Hiawatha. Also playing music and dancing in the streets, it was only missing a big grill and food! Seemed like an enjoyable time. I talked to them afterwards, and the police tried...

Re: F Line BRT (Central-University)

North Star's biggest flaw is poor frequency, not that it extended out too far from the core. This example doesn't really apply to this portion of the F Line. If there was a bus route with the frequency of the north star line, it would suck too, even if it was in the heart of Minneapolis. Northtown T...

Re: Highway Transitway Corridor Study

As of now the Park and Ride at the Maplewood Mall is basically empty. Express bus service ridership has cratered throughout the metro. They're talking about a limited-stop service along highway 36 from the Maplewood Mall to Downtown Minneapolis. It basically sounds like what was studied (and was pro...

NYC deserves some big thanks for nimbying itself out of a congressional seat. But now we need to build a shit ton of housing over the next 10 years to make sure we can keep our congressional seat by more than 89 people 😅

Amazon will through the years replace these workers with robots. So unless robots are going to start commuting via rail let's put our transit dollars where people are. No, people will be working with robots. Optimally in a harmonious way, but so far the results have been so-so. https://www.latimes....

These are all under 50 units! That should get some recognition as being pretty neat. This is the small-site incremental growth we should legalize everywhere.

Edit: to be fair, 2097-2115 Marshall Ave does look ugly.

From what I've seen, busy Chipotles have very little social distancing. The buildings just aren't built for it. It's worse for the workers stuck next to eachother in an assembly line, though it's not the best all-around.

Re: Ideas on Funding

The problem isn't the geographic scope of areas we're getting money from. It's a lack of money and political will.

If we were to create a 1% metrowide (7 County) sales tax and give it directly to metro transit to use, there would be huge improvements in our bus network overnight.

Re: Highway Transitway Corridor Study

BRT on 55 and 394 really wouldn't be that bad. It would give local cities and transit agencies along them the ability to change zoning and add connecting bus service. It creates the capacity for incremental change and improvements. Those changes won't happen overnight, but this covers a large and im...

Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2022

I feel like Walz is going to have a tough time. The republican base in greater Minnesota is losing its mind about masks and "rioters". The urban-rural divide might get real bad for the DFL. Look at Bakk and whoever else breaking off in the Iron range. It's gotta be our priority to grow and...

Re: Tunnels!

At one point I did some back-of-the-napkin math using examples of projects here and around the country, and at-grade LRT averaged $100M/mile, elevated LRT averaged $200M/mile, and Cut & Cover tunneled LRT averaged $300M/mile. (total costs also including all the contingencies and soft costs). Its...

I thought I remembered hearing that they weren't extending it to the Amtrak station like they should, though I could be wrong and maybe constituents have convinced the powers that be to do the sensible thing.

The former Rainbows Foods near White Bear Ave and Hwy 36 is becoming a Hyvee. They're constructing the gas station for it, and there is a Hyvee liquor store now in the adjacent strip mall. I'm suprised Cub Foods didn't stop this, considering they have a Cub Foods right next to it and they used to ow...

Are there specific congested areas or streets for Nicollet/Central with congestion that make combining them impractical, that could be solved with engineering like bus lanes/signal priority?
