Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

I noticed the sidewalk narrowing also in a few places, e.g. in front of the Public Service Center and between 9th & 10th Sts. It's clear that someone directed them to maximize the replacement of greenspace in the plan, and hopefully there will be room to remove some of it in the final plan. Down...

Re: "A Line" Snelling Avenue Arterial Bus

On a project with significant price inflation and additional operating expense foregoing more costly and difficult to maintain enclosed shelters was a good call. Personally I dress warm enough to keep warm when walking and standing under transit heat lamps. But using their standard shelters would b...

There is a clock on the part that will be torn down, too:

This one is useful for more people, too, I'd think. I sure used to use it to time my power hours at 8th St Grill.

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

The argument that Goodman and her allies are using is that the Walker can pick up the full cost and should given that it is in the wealthiest part of town and the pavement is in fine shape. This is a myopic excuse given the important role this link would play in the regional cycling network. I'm no...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

The bike roundabout at the Kenilworth-Midtown split is going to blow people's minds. No joke, my first thought was "Sweet! Can't wait to try that out." So, mind blown in a completely different manner. Aren't the traffic volumes heavily weighted towards the Midtown Greenway there? It seems...

Re: 29th Street Reconstruction Project

People are going to start walking more on 29th Street because they can walk in the street? Woonerfs aren't only or even necessarily about allowing people to walk in the street. Their origin was to allow children to be able to play in the street. That means that they should be designed in a way that...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

I hate riding on bikeways where the lanes fade in and out. The segment west of 3rd Ave looks like something I would avoid. It's too bad the city didn't plan for any N-S bikeways in the area between Park-Portland and 35W that could be a logical terminus for the 46th St bikeway. According to Hennepin ...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

not reconstruct Olson as heavily. Does anyone have more info on the plans for Olson? The Strib story said that it was "Metro Transit’s decision to overhaul Olson Hwy" -- is that accurate? Why would it be necessary to do a major reconstruction of an overbuilt highway? If that's true, could...

Re: Pedestrian Safety and Infrastructure Improvements

Disgusting, but not surprising, how this project got watered down from its original scope, which did include sidewalk widening and bump-outs. It is clear that pedestrians continue to be the lowest priority in Minneapolis. There is a difference, BTW, between beg buttons and auditory signal buttons. I...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

11ft lanes would also be needed to meet minimum state-aid standards This being an LRT project with a very long timeline and participation by the FTA, I'm guessing there would be an ability to build a variance to state-aid standards into the project. What do the the state-aid standards say about str...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

One minor quibble: due to curb/gutter, your car lanes would need to be 11ft, not 10. Otherwise yes that would theoretically work, though the lack of separation between vehicles and peds would likely doom such a cross-section. No they wouldn't. Vehicles can drive over gutters. What a responsible tra...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

Here is a 72' cross section at ped crossings: 6' - Sidewalk 10' - Car lane 5' - Ped refuge 30' - LRT ROW 5' - Ped refuge 10' - Car lane 6' - Sidewalk It is certainly not ideal, but just as certainly feasible, and since the sidewalks there are currently 6' without any buffer from the 12.5' car lane, ...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

Who is turning left there? EB between Penn and James there are two left turn possibilities, and WB there are three (four if you count the stub of Oliver). Remember, Broadway is not part of the street grid, and in this part of Broadway the grid is pretty well broken already. I understand that in most...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

From Broadway to James is about a kilometer. That's a pretty typical station spacing, especially for a relatively low-intensity area like that one. The traffic counts are low there (about 10k/day, or about what W 36th carries between Lyndale & Nicollet), and the intersections there see few turns...

Though I too would love to see a world in which people don't feel the need to surround themselves with 1-ton objects while transporting, this gas station is about as good as it gets. The car wash is unfortunate for anyone who rents an apartment next to it, but the building itself hides much of the f...

I cannot actually find the 5 acre provision in the code. I see that liquor stores are only allowed in C2 and up, and require a CUP at that. The language regarding the 2000' and 300' buffer zones was easy enough to find. But god help me I can't find the "5 acres contiguous" language anywhe...

So the plan is to eventually build an off-street trail on the Alumni Center lawn? It seems like they should have at least temporarily striped an on-street connection. I can't imagine there is a need for two northbound lanes on Oak now that both Washington and the rest of Oak are two-lane streets. Th...

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

I'm pretty sure we discussed the 24th St bridge quite a ways up-thread. They were considering a level ped bridge but it would have been more expensive because they would have had to excavate the freeway roadbed a bit more. You can probably find out how much more at the 35lake website, after much dig...
