Extension Option 2 would nearly make this TOD: http://www.startribune.com/hot-property-shoreview-corporate-center-apartments/419996143/ I think that, plus Bethel's "we already invested in cars and have no interest in going away from that" response should make Option 2 the priority. Edit - ...

Re: Manufactured Housing/N. Minneapolis Revitalization Efforts

I think this falls more under North Minneapolis revitalization than manufactured housing, but 17 of the vacant lots the city has been holding onto were just approved to be sold for new SFH construction.

Hell, I'd be vocally in favor of it if the revenue stream was enough to fund a faster buildout and would help keep maintenance current on existing trails.

I'm renovating my house, but stairs are such 4th century technology, so I'm waiting for Hyperloop so I can get from the basement to the attic in one second.

Re: Mortenson / USBank site - 333 Hennepin Ave E (~28 stories / 280 units)

It looks pleasant enough - but it sends a clear signal from the lack of street engagement: There's nothing to do here unless you're rich enough to live here, so you should go somewhere else.

Given a choice between an architectural marvel with no street retail, curb cuts, and other anti-pedestrian design features and a lackluster tower that adds to the foot traffic of the neighborhood, I'll take the latter.

I see no reason Richfield should cede any of that valuable Southdale land.
Is it cynical to see this as Edina not wanting other school districts to get better so their school district remains even more desirable in comparison?

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots

I think in the future they need to define their vision better than "iconic," and, unless they tried this and failed, make a proactive effort to put the request in front of developers from out of town. It could be going better. But if the plans for the United building fall through, at least...

I didn't say the city should use eminent domain to purchase anything. The city didn't use eminent domain to get ahold of the Kmart block.

Also, for a railroad without land grants, they somehow managed to find nearly three million acres of land grant holdings to give up when the government decided to force land grant railroads carry military loads at half rates during WWII.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Nor ... ilway_(U.S.) It says GN didn't use Federal land grants. States also granted land. In fact, while the company never took grants on it's own, the first paragraph of the Wiki you shared describes the company being formed from several existing railroads, one ...

Implying private railroads weren't subsidized to the tune of trillions of dollars in free land in order to build their networks.

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots

There's ways to get creative with it. For example, if Minneapolis wanted to buy the West Hotel lot, they could make the acquisition more palpable by saying they wanted to ensure part of the parcel would be set aside for a police outpost on Hennepin. It would ensure quality development on a major hol...

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots

And this is why the city should consider purchasing the poorest uses of land downtown and running the bid process themselves. It's expensive upfront, but the potentially lost property tax from a junk building (and lost potential residents/income tax/sales tax etc) adds up over thirty years. They can...
