Re: Nye's Polonaise Room - 100 block of E Hennepin Avenue
Maybe I've just missed some stuff because it wasn't controversial, but has the HPC ever voted to demolish anything? Well, most recently in the area they voted to allow demolition of Superior Plating, which some people on this site thought should be saved. Didn't they also vote to demolish the Totin...

Re: Nye's Polonaise Room - 100 block of E Hennepin Avenue
Last year the HPC voted to deny a demolition permit to a very similar building at 1500 6th street S. http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/meetings/hpc/WCMS1P-114102 That building was originally built as a Saloon for the Gluek Brewing Company in 1903 and designed by Boehme and Cordella, while the Nye's co...

Re: Northeast - General Topics
I've noticed that recently there have been crews drilling samples at the triangle lot where Hennepin and Central intersect. I think the address is 420 E Hennepin. Is there a proposal for this site? There is a "Now Leasing" sign on the site now. I noticed it on the way to work this morning...

Re: Downtown Retail News
This is more of a general comment. We hear so much about the gradual extinction of the department store as a retail format. I have to think that a lot of it is due to the fact that the few remaining players just don't seem to try very hard anymore. Locally we lament the loss of Daytons, but we're ha...

doesnt macy's put on that elf show still in the auditorium. before macy's there was actually time and consideration put into this annual presentation. now macy's just trots out the same theme every year. Apparently a lot of people feel the same way: http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2011/10/12/good-que...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis - General Topics
They still have the flower show. In the 1960's Daytons used to host dances called Teen Nights.I hear that there were concerts and events in the Dayton's Auditorium in the 60s/70s. Is it even used anymore these days, besides the Christmas show?

Re: Downtown Minneapolis - General Topics
The ramp is certainly no thing of beauty, but I would really hate to see the old Daytons auditorium go. I have many fond memories of the Christmas displays and flower shows. Growing up, I think it was one of the coolest things about downtown.

Re: IDS Center
The Wells Fargo tower looks beautiful in the Mpls skyline especially at night, however I think the IDS is the better building all around, especially at street and skyway level. I never thought the Wells Fargo tower worked very well at street level. The 6th street entrance and rotunda are actually ra...

I agree, and he's actually quite responsive to the more mundane issues of his constituency.I'm in his ward and he seems so much more accessible and interesting than Hofstede.

Re: Nicollet Mall Reconstruction Project
I'm glad they got rid of them. They would have cluttered up that intersection. Conceptually it was an interesting idea, but it's a bit naive to believe that putting a couple of exterior staircases down from the skyway is going to draw a lot of people from the skyway to street level.

What if it ends up being the last one in existence and then it gets an historical designation and can't be torn down?

Re: Northeast - General Topics
It was recently reported in the Superior Plating thread that Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin is apparently on board with the conversion of East Hennepin and First to two way streets. I'm wondering if and how this might affect the Nicollet/Central streetcar, which I believe will go down...

Re: Superior Plating site
ESG has done some very nice projects in the past, and they could do something very nice here if given the opportunity. I think it all depends on the developer here.

Re: Superior Plating site
Some things to consider regarding the "historic" fourth street alignment. Fourth street has been closed off at the railroad tracks for probably close to 50 years now (long before the townhouses were constructed in the 1980's). I believe it was done as an early traffic calming effort. Fourt...

I really struggle to understand why anyone feels they have a right to earn a living doing art (or anything else for that matter). Re: RBC Plaza / Gaviidae II renovation
I walked through the skyway level today. They have finished filling in the atrium at the third floor level. I'm rather surprised at how cheaply it's all being done. Basically the ceiling is just bare beams and floor decking with some acoustic panels hanging below it. It looks really jarring with the...

We haven't been for a while.. We have leveled a ton of historic housing around the U - an area with some ...
