Re: Downtown Retail News

I don't agree with that. I'm willing to spend money on clothes I like and will wear a lot (Nordstrom's, Len Druskin, etc.). Some of the boutiques opening up in the North Loop, while very cool and good for the neighborhood, seem to be stocked with stuff that is fun to look at, but not necessarily we...

That's infuriating. WA Frost and Moscow on the Hill have 3 parking spots between them, this new place has 13 and they say it will "ruin businesses." So only the first store to open on a street gets to use the on street parking?

I agree that this site can get snarky at times (me included) but I don't think Didier's response was really that big of a deal. Anyway, I hope you stay. The more people who leave because they don't like snark, the more snarky and insular this site will get.

Re: Downtown Retail News

Lake St is also a test store sometimes, they tested some weird checkout lane where there was a single line and a computer would call you to the right register when it was open. Interestingly, that method worked significantly faster for everyone. But the perception of guests was that it took longer,...

If you bought a car for 3000 and were lucky enough to keep it for 5 years, that'd be $600/year. If you only drove 1000 miles a year it's estimated it would cost you $1400 http://commutesolutions.org/external/calc.html . So even if you were lucky enough to not have anything at all happen to your real...

That's a really successful node that is lacking in restaurants. It does have Saguaro and Mac's Fish and Chips. Both are good. And Subway, Starbucks, Prima, and a yogurt place Oh, yeah, forgot about Prima. But Starbucks, Subway & Freestyle don't really count as "restaurants" in the sen...

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

Almost anywhere within two miles of your house no pedestrian has ever been hit by a car in 20 years? Judging by the 18 years I lived in quiet residential portions of second and third ring suburbs, that seems so unlikely as to beggar belief. I think there are so few people that walk anywhere in his ...

I don't know if I understood this correctly, but it would go from Roseville to st Paul and then to Minneapolis. What's the purpose of that? Since it goes through major st Paul streets and looks like it's mostly for Roseville and st Paul, why not have it end at union depot and have people transfer o...

Actually, something I'm curious about. What did they do with all the inventory when they switched over? Did Roundy's keep the Roundy's products and ship them to another DC? Did Cub just donate all the Roundy's products to a food bank or something and keep the name brand products around? At the Upto...

I'm inclined to agree. The "difficulty" of driving is at least as responsible as the ease of biking for the high rate of biking in Northern Europe.

I wonder how often loans like this are used in cases where the company wouldn't be able to otherwise get funding versus a succesful company taking advantage of every opportunity given? That seems to be an important distinction. If Code 42 was successful but wouldn't be able to grow without this loa...

this certainly points to there being at least something to the idea of routing transit where people are vs where some small area plan hopes there will be development. I'd say this absolutely gives credence to the idea that we should put transit where people are. Our "hopes for development"...
