Re: Saint Paul Union Depot

Bike too.....although Nice Ride is done for the season. I wonder how Nice Ride would do if they just had a few weather protected stations and bikes (fenders and such) at the most popular spots. We Minnesotans are hard-core and some people would still ride them (especially to watch trains at SPUD to ...

I'm not sure if this has been posted here, but it's a interesting read if you have the time.

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

What are the chances that funding (from some source, not necessairly from the swrlt budget) for the midtown streetcar is part of the deal for Mpls agreement on the shallow tunnel?. Seattle did something like this when a first hill lrt station was cancelled and a Broadway streetcar was built. Seems l...

Re: Green Line (Central)

A group is studying converting a lane of traffic on University to parking and bike lanes. Three years ago I could not have imagined doing this, but with the LRT traffic calming I actually think this could be a great idea. http://www.twincities.com/stpaul/ci_24357316/university-avenue-group-study-cu...

[quote="commissioner"]Does anyone know when the bike path along the Blue line between downtown Mpls and Cedar riverside opens up again? Thanks![/quote I wouldn't get my hopes up for that to be open unti lthe line is (spring at the earliest). Is it me or does it seem like there are more mor...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

Bluff street trail: is that between stone arch and bridge # 9? That little illegal stretch that everyone uses? (myself included) Nope, but there is hope (although negotiating with the RR is never easy) for this to become a official trail. I take it myself but always worry getting yelled at, http://...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

Tom, I think in this case, the savings may be more in vertical distance rather than horizontal. I agree with your point about how easy it is for bikers to cover ground quickly, as long as its flat. The (West) River Road route involves dropping down from the bluff top and then having to climb back u...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

I think the only convincing reason is that adjacent homes might find an elevated trail excessively ugly to look out at, ruining land values. And that too. If its ugly to look at it's probably ugly to ride on. Heck we can even build you a pretty bridge for you to ride on and still same some money co...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

Has anyone come up with a good reason why we shouldn't just relocated/elevate/whatever the bike trail and save $100 million? Because it's a horrible idea. Have you ever ridden a bike on a elevated trail above BOTH freight rail (cough, cough) and LRT (very frequent and pretty fast)? It really doesn'...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

The bike lobby (hehe) is being used as a pawn by wealthy people and their political allies to push for relocation or shallow tunnel. I find biking over Hiawatha on the Sabo Bridge quite nice. In all the times hundreds of times I've biked down Kenilworth, I've maybe seen a freight train six times. A...

he believes Hennepin County offered a token cycle track rather than a competitive cycle track option. I apologize for not doing my homework on this issue that I've completely ignored until right now, but when you say, "competitive" cycle track, do you mean that as in a cycle track option ...

Bluff Street Trail : saw crews removing trees from the rail bed on the west bank side of Bridge #9. I assume this will be done by next fall. I still haven't heard how they are going to connect the rail bed to the trail/ bridge. Flyover? Ramp with underpass?

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Urban Planning

Build out the streetcar system (mpls was very much shaped by streetcars and they would fit really well in the lines they have planned. Cycletracks on University/4th and a couple DT (besides Washington) and in Uptown would be nice. Move the Farmer's Market like it's been discussed. Do something cool ...

I think I've seen Mdcastle say in the past that he has a bias against buses from an earlier time in his life. Loud, smelly, hot (no AC), and bumpy. Won't ride them. Like a lot of people in this country, unfortunately. And not necessarily unjustified, given the complete lack of investment we've made...

Re: Northstar

That's kind of in a weird place between commuter rail and regional rail. It's really only serving commuters into Downtown Seattle, but it's got pretty large cities on each end, making it more like regional rail. But I'd call it more commuter since that's the trip it primarily serve, and it seems to...

If it's late at night or any other non-busy time I'll take Lyndale over Byrant between the bike bridge and 31st. Bryant is safe, but annoyingly slow. I like blvds, but the one on Lyndale between 31st and 40th (?) makes it dangerous for biking and annoying for drivers (probably a good thing though) i...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

what's interesting is no waterfall, no st anthony/minneapolis. it would have been an organic growth from the upper landing to fort snelling. i was always curious as to why the growth didn't happen closer to the fort. would've made for a picture postcard downtown setting today, the merging of the tw...
