Re: Stick vs. Concrete Construction

I do as well. I think that in 2060 or so we'll look at these buildings in the same way that we look at brownstones now, if there's any left. And that's a big if.

Re: Embarrassing Confessions of Urbanists

In my case it was to avoid going outside. We drove from my building's garage to Retek's garage, then took the skyway across 10th to Target Plaza. Relatedly, my "It'll be good for me to be forced outside, so I'm going to intentionally live in a non-skyway connected building" plan that seeme...

Well, yeah, but then they would have had to move away from stick and actually build a quality building, which is a pretty risky step apparently.

My girlfriend and I went to the Dakota Jazz Club for Valentine's Day. It's all of six blocks from my apartment, but we drove.

Still listed as taking two minutes to traverse the one block between Nicollet Mall and Hennepin stations. Argh.

Hmmm... Would B3 be enough of a destination to be able to survive without a high-visibility location? The basement level of the Crystal Court is pretty open.

Re: Star Tribune

For $2/week, I would probably continue to pay for it, assuming it worked on my phone. Its not really rational, but the $10/month level is a barrier for me.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

Does it need a separate urban design? Their standard mall store layout should fit just fine into a skyway bay.

Ayup. I'm on the same trial right now, and I'll be calling to cancel when it's up, mostly because it doesn't work on my phone. For no discernible reason, the login details that work without a problem on several different computers are not recognized by the mobile site, or even the desktop site viewe...

Re: City Center

I hope I'm wrong about it 'Winter 2016' being November (or December). But, it's apparently going to take 7-9 months for Sports Authority to open, starting from a blank space. Before Saks can open, it has to build out nearly twice as much space, which will take longer, though not twice as long. But b...

I also think it's unlikely. The idea of Mankato and North Mankato merging is floated every few years (North Mankato always shoots it down, because they're proudly independent despite sharing a school district and almost all city services), but North Mankato leaving Nicollet County is never mentioned.

Well, that would seem to confirm that they'll reopen both corner entrances. Better than the status quo, at least.

I would guess Winter 2016 means more like November 2016, unfortunately. Remember, they've got a lot more to do with their space than Sports Authority does.

I remember that there was some concern about snow loading on the Caspian Bistro building that would be caused by WaHu. Does anyone know how that was resolved?

They're starting construction on whatever they're doing to convert the space into a Walgreens', and nicely letting skyway traffic continue while it happens.

Re: RBC Plaza / Gaviidae II renovation

So I had been hoping that the blank walls leading to Centerpoint were just temporary, and that they would eventually reveal an entrance or windows or a display on the wonders of natural gas or something, but they have trim on them now, so they're probably permanent blank walls. Too bad.

Re: Nye's Redevelopment - 100 block of E Hennepin Avenue

The thing is, this situation isn't directly comparable to the Basilica/I-94 situation. As I understand it, most of the damage to the Basilica wasn't caused by the construction of the freeway, but by the decades of continuous vibration from the traffic once it opened. Once the Nyerise is built, the v...

Re: Blue Line (Hiawatha LRT)

Does anyone know what the 'proper train spacing' is? Like, if you're on a westbound/northbound train, and you come to a stop at the junction, are you just waiting for the train in front to clear Downtown East station, or for it to get all the way to Government Plaza station?
