Re: Velo apartments
No, not so much for safety reasons, although that would probably be in the back of my mind. They're required to be fully sprinklered, and barring something truly unexpected, sprinklers are very effective. My concerns would primarily be noise, as mentioned previously. There are things that can be con...

Re: Loring Vue Apartments
Yes, they're superior to a window AC unit, no doubt. I don't think any developer today could get away with building a new unit and telling their tenants to go buy a window unit. My disdain is largely based on aesthetics, as you suggest. The whole facade gets pock-marked by nasty vents, and every one...

Re: Loring Vue Apartments
I'd wager you $100 that the "small windows" you're seeing are actually the locations of future "magic packs" -- vents for heating and ventilation units. The sure sign of high quality construction...

Re: Velo apartments
There are a few things that play into the limitations on stick frame construction, but my understanding is that the code limits the construction type for stick built to five stories, taking advantage of all of the bonuses available. If you build it on top of a concrete plinth, and you're able to use...

Hmm. I think it's quite handsome -- much better than the UTEC project.

Re: Lake & Nicollet
I think removing cars from Eat Street would make it a destination, not something people would avoid. There is enough density and enough people that prefer to get around by means other than a car in Minneapolis to make this work. And for those that insist on driving, there are plenty of sidestreets ...

Re: Xcel Energy HQ
I've always assumed that were somebody so inclined, a skyway could be threaded between the Xcel building and the parking ramp in a fairly artful manner. The only trick is who would pay for it -- obviously Xcel isn't too excited about it (and having no prospect for skyway level retail, wouldn't get m...

Re: Nicollet Residences
I do not think that "Minneapolis" is holding back the top eight floors, its the financiers. YES. The mayor and the city basically threw a parade for the developers when they announced this project. I don't know where people get the idea that if a project doesn't move forward, it must be t...

Re: UTEC Student Housing
I can't get behind this project at all. Don't trash a nice building with really good bones that could be around for another hundred years for another stick-built crap box. And this strikes me as being a really inappropriate place for this scale of retail. I can see some small storefronts on 5th Stre...

Re: Lake & Nicollet
I'm still a little bit confused about why KMart would willfully participate in the demise of a very profitable store? KMart is *not* in the property development game....they're a retailer. I don't know much about this-- have they been hostile or conciliatory when these redevelopment ideas at Lake a...

Question: Do we think if this project had included a housing component, would it have been more or less likely to get approval?

Re: Bottineau LRT
I don't know why they're not planning one there, but even if they did the closest they could get to North Memorial is a half mile. Yeah, it certainly doesn't solve the North Memorial problem, but they might be able to run a shuttle from the station. But there's a large apartment complex right there...

Re: Lake & Nicollet
From a 12 year old Biz Journal story , here's a quick outline of the original Sherman plan to redevelop K-Mart. Nicollet Avenue and Lake Street Yanisch's observation applies to Sherman's proposal to reconnect Nicollet Avenue to Lake Street and to relocate Kmart. Dean Dovolis, CEO of DJR Architectur...

Re: Central Corridor LRT
That would make too much sense.I would like to see 3 buses run on Washington in Downtown to better serve the Mill District after CC is up, in which case it would make sense to take these exits, but they didn't put that change (suggested in the Access Mpls plan) into the CC service concept plan.
