Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

Counting the vertical bars on the windows on the Library, it appears as though the skyway connects at the very eastern side of the Library, which would put that park into the Nicollet right of way. So there isn't actually a setback, Nicollet just isn't a street anymore. But who knows if that is what...

Re: Downtown Office Market

I don't know if I buy that. At least the claim that Brutalist buildings on college campuses were designed for such purposes is a myth (http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_eye/2013/10/18/campus_brutalism_were_the_buildings_designed_to_thwart_student_riots.html), and I don't know why buildings downtown wou...

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, apparel and services make up 3% of average annual expenditures per "consumer unit."

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

I'd submit that the Cheesecake Factory draws more people to the Hancock center than its tall building magnetism. I think you are wrong on the Hancock Center. It is an easy visual guide for where you might want to go. If there was a Cheesecake Factory 2 blocks north of the Hancock Center, it wouldn'...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

Well, this sure is a tangent...but let me just say, I was born and raised here, and I have never used the word irregardless or most of these other supposed regional dialect words. I am from SLP....do I need to be from the country or something? So I am not sure I buy that saying things wrong is real...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

irregardless
I'll be that guy. That's not a word.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irregardless

"Irregardless is a word" the article starts with, and has been in use since 1795.

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

If there is a great clamoring for building supertalls in our city, one quarter block 70 story building will not quash that. Or to put it another way, if this building scares off all developers from building tall buildings in our city then there was not a great demand to build them in the first place...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

So we should select a shorter one? Why? If another, better supertall is in the near distant future, it will still happen, and then we'll have two.

It says in there that a restaurant has to have seating for 25 people if they serve liquor. Or am I missing something?

Re: Holidazzle Market

Yes, that's exactly the difference, but it seems like a strange thing to object to. Didier wants to celebrate ties to modern Scandinavian, but if anyone also celebrates Finland while doing so it''s too confusing?

Re: Holidazzle Market

I agree that we don't necessarily celebrate modern Scandinavia much, but I'd say that is pretty common. A lot of people have ties to Scandinavia, but through their great-grandparents, so their culture is tied to Scandinavia as it was 100 years ago. We do not have many ties to modern Scandinavia. Thi...

Apparently the Bachelor Farmer is Scandinavian influenced, but it's not an obvious connection and I don't think it's really advertised. The one sentence description if you google Bachelor Farmer is "The Bachelor Farmer serves fresh and simple food that honors Minnesota's Nordic heritage."...

Dispersal of German Americans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:German1346.gif
Dispersal of Scandinavians: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Censu ... States.png

The first is the entire Midwest. The second is largely Minnesota (and Utah and Washington).

Re: Holidazzle Market

Not to pick nits, but we're not nearly as Scandinavian as people think we are. For some reason that heritage seems more celebrated in Minneapolis (and the region), while German ancestry is somewhat relegated to being the boring default setting, despite the fact that nearly a quarter of the populati...

Re: The Police

As for sports riots, people don't get all moralistic about white people "destroying their own neighborhoods" even though they are rioting over a far less worthy cause.

White people riot over sports = No big deal
Black people riot over systematic oppression = Oh my god how could they?!?!
