Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2018
what exactly is the problem with a little of that messaging when the GOP's mantra is constantly "just pick yourself up by your bootstraps, son" Well, the problem is it doesn't work. How many urban blacks have Republicans convinced to vote for them with that message? Plus it's disingenuous...

Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2018
I don't think anyone has a good idea about how to compromise between "I'd like a job that's inherently polluting" and "we don't want you to pollute." If this is the majority view of the DFL, and I increasingly think it is, then the DFL will continue lose the Iron Range and quite...

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project
Seriously? Where is that happening? I admit the scope of this project is so overwhelming that I haven't paid much attention to details...They are also permanently removing local sidewalks as part of this project. This project is a huge loss for non-motorized travel and neighborhood connectivity.

Yeah, I was going to say, the Sabo Bridge requires elevation, a road crossing, and at least one sharp turn (if you're either coming from or turn onto the Hiawatha Trail into downtown). This bridge isn't that different. It even looks like the Sabo Bridge! I was thinking of that too. I mean, yeah, th...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
A buddy of mine has one. It's pretty cool, but very frustrating to ride with him when he's on it. We'll head off to our destination maybe 4-6 miles off for beers, a game, dinner, whatever, and he sets a faster (but not obviously unreasonable) pace. So without thinking about it, I simply ride faster ...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Restaurant News
I heard from a store owner downtown that Mc Cormick and Schmick's is closing...don't think I've seen anything confirming yet, so put that down as a rumor for now. If so...they aren't amazing or anything, but unless something else is lined up pretty quick it is yet another depressing empty spot. The...

Guess who filed an appeal at the last second? They have already lost their case 3 times (with the City and in court). When they lose in appeal all those donors lose all their money down the black hole. But what this will do is delay the project yet again. Where it gets weird is whether they will be...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
Trump budget will exclude funding for transit projects without 'full funding grant authority', which includes SWLRT. I'm interested to hear the opinion of people that know more than I, but my first thought is this could be the bullet to the head. Not because I think Trump's budget will pass, but bec...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.
I don't think there is a constituency that loves Harteau, but it's the optics and the way it would play out. It's not really the Fortune or New York Observer things at all, but it does strike the general chord that someone who 'some think is lousy and few think is great' would be firing someone that...

Of course those lists are all baloney click bait intended to cause exactly the 'wait, what?' response, but yep. She's number 22. Right ahead of Joe Biden, 8 spots ahead of Elon Musk, and 9 ahead of Justin Trudeau. EDIT: I can only imagine the campaign lit placed on our doors by Hodges' opponents: &q...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.
I don't think Hodges would create many enemies by firing Harteau but she sure would have letting Delmonico be in charge of the 4th precinct. I don't know. Some of the quoted northsiders seem to be okay with him. I also don't know how you can keep a police chief who refuses to meet with the mayor ov...

I've spent WAAAY too much time at the Cardinal (they used to sponsor my softball team, so was there roughly once a week from April to October for about 8 years). Never saw any trouble there other than a teammates bike being stolen (and almost certainly not by a patron). Crowd skewed older as might b...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars
I think people are underestimating how quickly insurance companies will make manual driving unaffordable once this technology is available. And I think you're vastly overestimating the insurance companies' ability to drive the market. No way politicians would allow insurance companies to force ever...

It'll happen, but I agree that it's a long ways off. The switch to electronic trading vs. open-outcry at the large stock and commodity exchanges comes to mind as an example of eliminating humans for superior machine execution. It was talked about way back in the 80's, and even then the basic technol...

What are all those people doing? They are almost certainly skid row inhabitants. EDIT: whoops, see other folks already made that observation. For some more history on it, look up the TPT documentary "Life on Skid Row" (or something like that) which is specifically about the Gateway and th...

Serious question. Do you "allow and consider" the viewpoints that all non-whites are less than human? Do you "allow and consider" the viewpoint that the sun goes down so solar panels are bad, or that we'll use up all the wind so wind turbines are bad? Do you "allow and cons...
