Re: UTEC Student Housing - (1313 Fifth Street Southeast)
A few thoughts on that: 1.) Again, I think the use of "Technology" in the name is a bit misleading, and that a good portion of these businesses are not tech start-ups. 2.) UTEC's occupancy rates have been steadily declining for some time. It is described as an "incubator space," ...

Re: UTEC Student Housing - (1313 Fifth Street Southeast)
Sorry, I should clarify:
I wasn't really taking issue with your use of the term "ma and pa." I'm more taking issue with the guy profiled in the article and his idea that losing UTEC is going to really damage the community by driving small businesses out.

Re: UTEC Student Housing - (1313 Fifth Street Southeast)
^^^That's kinda what I mean. I wasn't under the impression that "mom and pop" own any bakeries or general stores in UTEC. If they do, it is waaaay out of my frame of reference. Pretty sure it's a lot of marketing and sales things....maybe a few small political consultants. Maybe, *maybe* s...

Re: UTEC Student Housing - (1313 Fifth Street Southeast)
Small businesses? My experience with UTEC was MPIRG, Minnesota's wing of NPIRG, which was subject to a class-action lawsuit for working its employees 60 hours a week, no overtime.
If the rest of the "small businesses" are anything like that, well....good riddance.

Re: Gateway Park
Although I understand it is a bit tongue-in-cheek, the premise of "every great city has one" doesn't really work, because: #1. I could name *many* global cities that do not have signature downtown parks, and #2. Not all of the "thousands" of parks the article cites in Paris and L...

Re: Nic on Fifth - (455 Nicollet Mall)
Kinda sad we consider sub-300 foot buildings skyscrapers in this town. Are we ever going to have something over 40 or 50 stories built again in this town? Now let me tell you my friend from my own experience: you are going to open up a can of worms with this comment! I've really come around a...

Re: Peavey Plaza reconstruction project
^^^ A much better proposal and having a restaurant is a great idea. Now, can there be a compromise between all the stakeholders in this renovation project :?: I don't know if there needs to be any "compromise" if this thing gets listed on the NRHP, per se. But, I think a big part of the g...

Re: Peavey Plaza reconstruction project
You had me second guessing my memory here, so I googled it: http://tclf.org/news/features/charles-birnbaum-and-m-paul-friedberg-letter-re-peavey-plaza-design-proposals I think this was Friedberg's official "bridge burning" with the city on this project, and the juncture at which we started...

Re: Peavey Plaza reconstruction project
Friedberg was on the design team, initially, but resigned..."creative differences." The design in your quote was pretty much ignored by the city. Hypothetically, though, if the NRHP saw it, it could substantiate the claims that Peavy does not need a design overhaul at the scale or cost tha...

I for one don't know much about this process. What does the timeline look like?
Also, my understanding is that the NRHP is rather arbitrary in its standards....is this a Hail Mary pass?

Re: Mill City Quarter - (300 South 2nd Street)
What if I told you guys that Jean Nouvel designed it? What if I told you that the Guthrie is a flat-out awesome building, no matter who designed it? I know you've got no love for it, Elf, but don't assume that people who appreciate it are weak-minded suckers for a "name" architect. I'll t...

Re: Minneapolis & St. Paul Fantasies and Speculations
Many cities have indoor markets-- Lexington Market, Findlay Market, Pike Street, etc. I think part of why they are successful is the fresh product-- not produce, meat-- and the local restaurants. Unless this had something different from what one could get on Nicollet Mall or in Lowertown, why would ...

Re: Nicollet Residences - (455 Nicollet Mall)
Are we honestly obsessing over Arcades, now? Really, guys? Arcades??? My gosh, what other useless frills do we wish Minneapolis had? An Obelisk, perhaps? A Monument Avenue? Besides, doesn't Gaviidae already function essentially as a wide arcade? If you want healthy retail, I get it, and I'm right th...
