Re: Freight Rail News and Happenings

My GPS recently sent me through the Quentin Ave underpass, and I was honestly worried it was malfunctioning because it just felt like such an odd place.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market

I feel like it's at least reasonable to assume that directors (of any type of institution) benefit in their managerial roles from being able to physically experience the places which they manage. The optics of it are also not negligible. It's distracting from the mission when having to answer / deal...

Re: Suburban Transit (Opt-out Services Providers)

I was a Southwest Transit rider for a long time, and while the peak-time express busses were truly convenient (they just had busses lined up and sent them off as they filled - probably 90 second headways), anything other than that was a hassle. I don't know the state of their finances, but if the Gr...

Maybe they can poach some prospective LRT operators from SW Transit's driver pool ;)

I would think that a small hostel could do well in Dinkytown, if something like that could ever get approved here.

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

I guess the tradeoff is either a station with a great connection to the D line vs a poor connection with the F line but with more residents/businesses in walking distance of stations? Not sure the third station is worth it but idk what metro transit’s reasoning is Agree that this is the key tradeof...

Re: 2023-24 Minnesota Legislature

St. Cloud is asking for a whooping $100 million to revitalize its downtown. Did they just pick a number out of the air, go-big-or-go-home style? The details for this project ("Downtown St. Cloud Catalyst Infrastructure and Reinvestment Improvements") are not a lot more than just "Dow...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

Is there a technical reason why they chose James over Emerson/Fremont? Is the stop spacing too close? I can't imagine that the headways would be short enough for that to be a problem.

Re: Housing Market/Economics - General Topics

Do you want to buy a house in this market? If yes, keep in mind there's five people behind you that aren't going to demand a home inspection, either house flippers with cash or people that are apparently more desperate to buy a house than you are. You are undoubtedly correct, but I will continue to...

Re: Interstate 94

Don't you need like a special dispensation to *not* have full movement connections wherever two Interstate routes intersect? Especially when a 3-digit meets its parent. (Of course, an "interstate" running from Minnetonka to Minneapolis is maybe not exactly what Eisenhower had in mind.)

Re: Interstate 94

Completely agree with the list above. Can't remember who made them, but there were Google Maps-ified mockups of a regridded North Loop without the viaducts, and a re-gridded CSAH-122 (35W / 4th St spaghetti). Those would be such huge improvments, at the cost of much less political capital. Can I inc...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

They actually unveiled a new design for the 21st Ave bridge, which would actually invovle a full extension of 21st Ave across 94 (ped, bike, vehicular traffic). It would intersect with the 94 off-ramp at-grade, which the engineers said would take some left-turn pressure off of Broadway proper since ...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT

Blue Line light-rail extension recommended for north Minneapolis. Early community reaction is positive, especially from Jeremiah Ellison. Design of the new 21st Ave bridge will be extremely important, to avoid it just becoming an extension of the 94 offramp full of speeding traffic. I'm curious wha...

Re: Housing Market/Economics - General Topics

Yeah, I agree, it's a very unfortunate outcome but not an explicitly discriminatory action that sellers are taking. Structural racism as opposed to racist intent (but maybe I'm giving people too much credit). What's the solution to this? Do people in private sales really forgo a home inspection? Ful...

Re: Interstate 94

Certainly *most* of the trips on 94 through this stretch are local, but the long-distance traffic isn't zero. Certainly some of those long-distance travellers could re-route along the 494/694 loop, 62, 36, etc. Maybe not a huge effect, but not negligible either. Additionally, for those of us who asc...

Re: Dan Patch Intercity Regional Passenger Rail

I know it's the way the game is played, but the naming of these groups always irks me. "Citizens Concerned for [X]" is just a dog whistle. In this Strib article below, it talks about the group "Transit Done Right" which is (of course) just opposed to all transit, "sharing re...
