Re: Dismantling Downtown Freeways

Those fantasy maps are great, but one thing I think they miss is the length off ramps require to be safe. The very lowest threshold in the city is from 35W to 4th st and University ave. Those ramps are so short, cars come screaming off the freeway and need to slam on the brakes. Super unsafe for al...

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

It's funny that someone would call the proposed development "eyesores" when the intersection currently has two shuttered buildings, a vacant lot (that looks like it was probably another closed business), and a rather sad-looking laundry. Yet that, somehow, is better than what's proposed? ...

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map

I bet even their subscription base will lose interest. The first several dozen articles about how Minneapolis is going to the dogs because of bike lanes and new apartments were probably real interesting for suburbanites to read at the breakfast table but eventually they'll stop caring. The perils o...

That would be awful. I was thinking of something considerably more enchanting.
Would it be horrible for me to suggest that we draft "95 Urbanist Theses" and affix them to the scaffolding? :D

Per the locator on the website, there's an Anytime Fitness slated to go in at 2904 Lyndale. That sounds as though it could be Lime's address... Is it?

Re: Northeast (and Southeast) - General Topics

Not to be a pedant, but I think the downtown / University grid is actually 12 streets to the mile, rather than the 8 x 16 long-and-short-block system prevalent in South Minneapolis. This yields 440 x 440 foot blocks from centerline to centerline (though I'm unsure how much of that is given over to s...

Re: Ford Twin Cities Assembly Plant Redevelopment

Hoppe and a coalition of a dozen like-minded neighbors worry that the city’s plans to partner with an as-yet unknown developer and create a “sustainable” urban village will overwhelm their street with traffic, while blocking views of the Mississippi River. Even without development there, they say, ...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Restaurant News

Those places with dozens of taps creep me out. When was the last time the keg was changed, the taps cleaned, or even a single beer poured on the 78th most popular variety? <shudder> With a beer-geek crowd, the 78th most popular might still sell a quarter or third as much as the most popular. We lik...

I'm not complaining as much as I'm curious about how the rules work. If there's a rule that states that you cannot use local streets to get from your home to your work (and vice versa) -- whether that's during a period of construction, period of high congestion, or just an average day -- I'd like t...

Meanwhile, it's not a "boondoggle" to build and maintain thousands of lane-miles of state and interstate highway so that people can live 35 miles from their jobs. Nor is it a boondoggle to send CSAH money to all the overly capacious mega-stroads that take them to their big-box grocery stor...

Re: CPM North Loop Office Building - 419 Washington Ave N / 420 N 3rd St

You know designers aren't going into design for the money, right? And even if it were only about the money, enough repeat blockage means the companies won't be around to channel those paychecks to the designers. Granted, that's an extreme case -- not literally every project gets shut down by NIMBYs...

Also related is the long-planned elimination of the "Hwy 55 cutoff" from US 52/Koch to CR 42, and the long-planned upgrade of CR 42 to a state route across Dakota and Scott Counties. Pure roadgeek fantasy here, but I've always wondered whether it would be feasible to extend CR 42 from its...

It's also kind of a selective argument. The presence of the ramps probably brings in additional Minneapolis shoppers who live at a sufficient distance to make non-auto trips impractical (whether objectively or merely subjectively).
