Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
At-grade versus tunnel/elevated along the most constrained part of Broadway is probably a time difference of a couple minutes at most. At-grade allows the street to be better served for peds and transit users while a grade separation really only serves to keep the status quo. As for Fremont and Eme...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
Well if they're not going to consider a tunnel option, which I think is incredibly stupid and short-sighted, then I support the elevated option. We're already pushing the limits with shoehorning Riverview on West 7th, and we know the Green Line on University has had and will have many conflicts with...

Re: Freight Rail News and Happenings
A person walking their bike on BNSF's Wayzata Subdivision near Big Willow Park in Minnetonka was struck and killed by a train Monday evening. Unfortunately this isn't too surprising for me since I've seen a lot of people walk on or next to the tracks in that area. There's several desire paths on the...

Re: Minnesota Transportation Funding (General)
Since over 85% of the state's lane miles are outside the Metro district and most of this money is for routine maintenance, it's a safe bet most of it will go to outstate Minnesota. I guess driving up to a cabin, resort, lodge, or campground on the North Shore still beats sitting around your city ho...

Re: Minnesota Transportation Funding (General)
I thought Highway 61 had a second lane up till Two Harbors, I know my brother went to Lutsen for a bike race a few weeks ago and was annoyed a bit with either traffic or some kind of construction that far north. Speaking of 61 I wonder how many people would try to argue that it should be expanded t...

Re: Minnesota Transportation Funding (General)
if only the funding for roads could be used for things like highway removals road diets, etc. But that's wishful thinking. Although I'm willing to bet most of said funding will go to projects outside of the metro maybe including the farthest suburbs, so I'm wondering how bad traffic/induced demand ...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
I think they'll find more political opposition to elevated than to tunnel, and with good reason. Although tourists love the feel that the El gives Chicago and that the elevated lines in Paris give, they really do divide communities and darken the streets that people live and walk on. Those are much...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
Duluth Transit Authority is studying improvements to their bus system with a simplified network of routes and higher frequency service. On their Facebook page they mentioned two routes would have a frequency of 10-15 minutes during the day and it would be the first step towards possibly implementing...

Re: Red Line (Cedar Avenue BRT)
It sounds like the AVTS issue was just that Metro Transit did not have access to the door opener remotes. It sounds like they are acquiring them and working to program them so they can return to using the AVTS. MVTA buses don't seem to have them either because riders have to press a button to open ...

I looked around the Belt Line Blvd, Wooddale Avenue, Blake Road, and Downtown Hopkins stations and they've been preparing the roadbed where the light rail tracks will be. Foundations for the overhead wire poles have been built.

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
Bridges are much much cheaper then tunnels and especially underground stations. It has been confirmed that although no underground stations will be apart of it. Elevated will be considered in stretches and elevated parts over Broadway is something that we can and should push for. Having strategic e...

Tunnels under North Minneapolis and Uptown: Too expensive. Bridges across highways and stroads, and tunnels under the airport and Kenilworth: Absolutely necessary and worth the price tag. Sometimes I don't get the Met Council's logic. Bridges are much much cheaper then tunnels and especially underg...

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
I'd love to see a pop up bus route on the route of the future Blue Line with limited stops like the future train will have. Unlike the Green Line this alignment mostly follows roads so it wouldn't be hard to put a bus on the future route. Why wait to connect people to where they need to go when we ...

Re: Red Line (Cedar Avenue BRT)
While I still believe the duplicate 442 and 442X routes are a waste of resources, I admit I do like that it stops right by the 28th Avenue Station instead of going straight to the mall. It's quicker and easier for transferring to the Blue Line, and in my case it's a much shorter walk to my car at th...

How long will the bus only lanes be on Lake Street Here's the "Balanced Bus Priority" concept which they are pushing forward. It will be complicated, they are trying to not just speed up the bus but also add bicycle facilities and slow general traffic. From the latest report (page 116): •...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago
79 mph speed limit? I take it there's some kind of design standard that takes effect at 80 mph? Correct. Above 79 mph requires more advanced train control systems, and very likely also upgrades to the tracks and railroad crossings. Why they chose 79 as the magic number would require asking the peop...
