Re: Northside - News & General Topics

Plans for a mixed-use building at 1300 W Broadway (right at the start of the curve) called The Resolute have been submitted to the city. The city's application database says it would have 71 rental units and retail space for a barber shop, a day care, a bar, and a cafe. That could be pretty exciting.

Re: Minnesota Representation at the Federal Level

I can see no reason on the horizon why Minnesota’s growth rate would increase. With southern states growth rate double or triple of ours, I don’t see how both states won’t lose seats. I think a lot of the talk about "climate refugees" heading to Duluth or wherever is pretty overblown, but...

Minnesota keeps its eighth congressional district by an insane margin of 89 New Yorkers.

Anything within the freeway loop is downtown Minneapolis, there's no point in being overly pedantic about this.

Re: Alatus Development - 411-417 Lexington Pkwy (MNDOT Snowpile site)

I was surprised by the Mayor's veto, I wouldn't have thought he would have that power either. The memo's first point is fairly persuasive, at least to this non-lawyer. That being said, the rest of the memo isn't as strong. The memo's third point is deeply cynical. It calls the Mayor's veto "a c...

Re: Southside - News & General Topics

Last week, the city received an application for a 38-unit apartment building at 2625 Lyndale Ave S, associated with the previous Rex 26 development . This one is currently listed as being called "Rex II," and would presumably replace the large residential house directly to the south of the...

Re: Ideas / Wish List for Mpls in 2021

I've been told that part of the reason the Nicollet Streetcar has never been quite killed is so the city could have something shovel-ready in case Infrastructure Week ever happened. Apart from that project being bad and apart from it not really being shovel ready, everything I've seen from the Bide...

Re: Gold Line BRT (Gateway Corridor)

I was surprised that this project is still anticipated to be completed in 2024, and while I still don't totally believe that they'll make that, Ethan Osten told me on Twitter that they are at 60% engineering, so they should speed through that stage and be ready for construction next year. On another...

Re: Alatus Development - 411-417 Lexington Pkwy (MNDOT Snowpile site)

If you're like me and confused about how the Mayor could have the power to veto a denial of a denial of an appeal, the answer is that Minnesota law forces cities to approve or reject projects within 60 days of formal submittal, or else they are automatically approved. What the Mayor is doing here is...

Re: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board

It always amazes me when people who agree on 90-95% of things will find that 5-10% of disagreement and use it to completely destroy their relationship, and the Minneapolis Park Board seems like an institutional version of this. Inexplicable how toxic that body is.

Re: Future Cars: Electric and Autonomous Vehicles

Yes, Minneapolis' proposed new parking regulations would... Require electric vehicle charging for new parking o 10% of spaces for residential, office, and hotel must have L2 chargers o 5% of other non-residential spaces must have L2 chargers o Most spaces will have a requirement to provide electric ...

At least it'll be cheap to eventually tear down.

But if you're going to go to the trouble of redoing the building, why wouldn't you make it nice? If you're not going to make it nice, why not just embrace the bizarre faux-pagoda that exists today?

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

It's pretty easy to plan a route, but based on our track record it takes way too long to go from planning to actually building these routes. In the case of the one BRT line that's almost complete (the Orange Line) and the one BRT line that's approaching engineering (I assume you're referring to the...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

I get the frustration, but at the same time I think it's important to remember that MSP does have a bunch of projects in the hopper. One LRT line is being built and another is well-advanced in planning and engineering. There's one BRT line that's almost complete, one BRT line that's approaching engi...

Re: Tunnels!

I think it already does. My understanding is that a train every 2.5 minutes (so, 10 minute frequency on two lines) is the absolute max they can get through the downtown stoplights, hence the Blue Line frequency dropping slightly when the Green Line opened in 2014. So I guess it depends on how you d...

Re: Nicollet-Central Streetcar

Other U.S. cities like Houston, Austin and Portland... You missed Dallas, which is further along than any of them. The D2 subway project (a light rail tunnel through downtown that will relieve but not replace the existing at-grade trunk) was approved locally yesterday. I think Joey has it correct. ...
