Re: Crime
And just a little hint: when journalists start writing articles such as you so vehemently disparage, it's almost ALWAYS because they are seizing upon popular zeitgeist, such as, oh I don't know, the #metoo movement? In other words, where there is journalistic smoke (hype), there is often fire (a va...

Re: St. Paul Restaurant News
Not to dismiss the noise that neighbors must have experienced (and still probably do), but I fear this likely means the death of yet another live music venue.

Re: Crime
Bottom line: your analogy carries no more water than an entire article based on anecdata. Furthermore your response is disingenuous and dismissive and therefore rather hypocritical. The question isn't if Hennepin is 'bad' - it always has been. That dismisses nothing and nobody. That doesn't say 'ba...

Re: 2024 Olympic Bid?
Our state literally just won gold in curling and hockey. But yeah sure, ice fishing is what we're good at. Apologies if my references to nordic skiing, snow fall, and alpine environments wasn't enough for you to understand that when I was referring to the 'environment', I was referring to the outdo...

Re: Crime
Hennepin has always been sketch. In my 30 years living in Minneapolis I have never known it to not be...gritty. It's less sketch now than it was in the 80's/90's. For all the anecdata saying it's really bad now I'm sure we could gather anecdata saying it's really good. The only thing that stops us ...

Re: Crime
I think as a city we need to focus more on the vitality part and less on some people feeling slightly uncomfortable around certain people. Careful... What Arradondo refers to in the article as the conduct that isn't illegal ("lack of civility and respect") is harassment, sometimes of a se...

Re: 2024 Olympic Bid?
Even the nordic events would be dicey here, or at least less attractive than many other locales. Contrary to what we locals might think, Minnesota just doesn't get all that much snow (at least relative to true alpine environments, and a warming climate doesn't help). Sure they can make snow, but tha...

Re: Shoveling
I've gotten myself into a situation that's kind of funny. I have older neighbors immediately to one side, and some other older neighbors two houses down on the other side. I have a snowblower, so it would be pretty inconsiderate not to do their driveways and sidewalks. However, I feel like a jerk if...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
Woooooow. All I've heard, parkingwise, is a co-worker complaining that his contract spot in the C Ramp isn't letting him park there on gameday. Not that he'd be coming downtown that day anyway, but he feels he should be refunded the $4 or whatever his contract works out to per day. There's likely s...

Re: Amazon's New HQ?
@mspbjhalter tweeted that MSP submitted 18 sites. What were our metro boosters thinking?! 🤦♂️ ...they wanted to come off as desperate, clingy, and versatile? They should have mailed it day before the deadline on the back of an Arby's Napkin and given only 1 site.. I'm sure they would have been more...

There is a deal in place to sell the Solera building. On the one hand, there's a new lounge opening up in the Solera space, which is unambiguously better than an empty storefront. On the other hand... It's gonna be a Jack Links . Saw that. As someone who loves some jerky from time to time this make...

...selecting a threshold for 'fair' wage seems to be more art than science. I think this is actually the key to the whole argument. I've begun to think that there are a whole lot of relationships that can be understood with a pseudo-'Laffer Curve' (the infamous and much maligned argument made for t...

Re: Southside - General Topics
A lot of regulars are commenting on the articles about how often it's dead in there, and how they think the minimum wage is just a way for the owners to blame someone else for their failures. That very well could be true, especially as the wage hike hasn't even kicked in yet. I think the reality is...

Whiskey Junction to close. Cites pending minimum wage hike. Real bummer for music. Twin Town held their recitals there which were pretty cool (said as a previous participant).

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
Mixed feelings right now. On the one hand, I strongly support RCV, and think it's entertaining/fascinating to work through the possibilities.
On the other hand, doing just that is probably why a big chunk of the population throws their hands in the air and thinks this RCV is ridiculous.

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
The question really is how do NLP's seconds break? I'd think Hodges and Dehn both do well, but how well relative to each others makes the difference as to which is eliminated next, or whether Hoch is. Yeah, and the other thing is its easy (for me anyway) to overweight generalizing. Pounds supports ...

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
I don't think that's right. Totally unscientific, but I'm not aware of any actual data available, but I saw a lot of people putting Hodges, Dehn and NLP (in various orders) on their ballots together. I guess I wouldn't be shocked about that. People that want Pounds or Dehn, but where Hodges benefit...

...and thinking about it more, I'm even going to hedge my prediction on Hoch 3rd. Could very likely be Dehn ultimately in 3rd. EDIT: nerding out a bit, but it's pretty fun to think about. I see it possibly going like this: Pounds Eliminated, significantly helps Dehn. If it helps him enough, Hoch is ...

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017
Presumably, since they are the 3 most 'similar' candidates, I'm guessing the 2nds and 3rds are relatively evenly divided (Hodges 2nds and 3rds are mostly among Frey and Hoch, etc.). If that's the case, it's likely Frey. But it will matter most who the 2nds and 3rds were behind Nekima and Dehn, beca...
