Re: Vikings Stadium

Those examples are more of a reminder that stadiums need to be build right than anything else. None of the stadiums being replaced were ever great facilities. Great point. Notice how 3 of those are domes (StL, metrodome and georgia dome). Domes are generally outdated concepts in comparison to today...

Re: Vikings Stadium

I feel like these two "leaks" including the semi-translucent material and the height both point to a possible similar design as the one HKS proposed that almost looks like a swooping tent. We can really only go off the couple initial renderings they proposed but to me it sounds like they m...

Re: Midtown Corridor

what would be the length of the line? Would they ultimately want to connect the SW LRT line with the central LRT line on the other side of the mississipi? I can see having a line that crosses 3 lines would be a popular transfer line. Even if it is done in several phases

Re: Mall of America - Bloomington

Off topic and min-chi-cbus you can probably attest to this as well, but when I first moved to Columbus and mentioned that I was from minnesota every single person said "Oh that's where the Mall of America is!" must be the most well known thing about the state to a lot of people

Re: Apartment Boom

I still think the demand for housing in Uptown is still much higher than the supply. I think there will be a steady and continual growth in that part of Minneapolis for a long time to come. I say steady because those zoning regulations seem to be some of the most strict in the metro so projects seem...

Re: What makes a good skyline?

Glad you started this thread. It is all a matter of opinion- but if we are talking about a skyline (not just a city in general) then personally the things that make it attractive are variety of building styles to add interest and being dense and symmetrical. Examples from what i've seen personally: ...

Re: Convention Center Hotel - (330 South 12th Street)

Keep in mind this hotel would not just be for conventions only. It would also aide Minneapolis in their bid to host events like the super bowl, various all-star games, big ten football championship, political conventions, final four etc etc etc

Re: Convention Center Hotel - (330 South 12th Street)

Study was released today - would cost $300m, about half in subsidies:

A $150 million subsidy is a tough pill for the public to swallow right now... especially for a hotel.

Fully lit at night with green glowing husks and yellow corn.. I think it would be amazing. Sounds l...

I don't think your comment took the discussion off topic at all. Design is definitely a contentious point on this project. Although nothing like the neighboring Nic (thank god....)

Re: 4Marq - (400 Marquette Avenue)

When will the Twin Cities get serious about increasing the design bar? Will this region settle for mediocrity for the sake of progress or will it challenge the current landscape and emerge as a region with civic pride in its development projects overall? I'm wondering what will help push the envelo...

Re: Vikings Stadium

Why is it such an architectural sin to copy something, especially if it is beautiful and renowned? It seems like we'd be better off copying a successful architectural example than going for something new but weird just to satisfy the egotistical cravings of the insulated architect-class. um... prog...

Re: 4Marq - (400 Marquette Avenue)

It seems like Mortenson is just one-upping Opus here. "Oh you are making a high-rise apartment downtown? We will make one right next to it except taller, sleeker and won't take nearly as long making it a reality".

Edit: Didn't see John's post above :-) great minds think alike

Re: Convention Center Hotel - (330 South 12th Street)

^^ is it cheaper because the majority of the building is condos? I would imagine all the finishings can be passed on to the owner to decide/supply/install and would cut down on the cost to the developer..?

So earlier in this thread, the photo that showed a whole wall that can rotate panels to create an open feel- just wanted to point out that it looks like it is also in the rendering above. That is the wall that is supposed to look west towards downtown.

Re: The Waters of 50th

While I agree it's important to have a design that fits the neighborhood, at the same time this is a senior development and the developers have little care in adding to the streetscape. So this totally falls on the local review boards requiring changes to the design. The developers know that most of...

http://www.uctc.net/access/41/access41_twoway.shtml That link is to a snippet from a research paper about the effectiveness of two way versus one way street networks. Apparently two way street networks are more efficient then some think. So says that article. The main drawback to a two way is the le...
