Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing

Great article by Richard Reeves at Brookings on the impact of exclusionary zoning on inequality. I know many here are already deeply familiar with these ideas, but the piece is a very succinct and cogent synthesis that could help the uninitiated understand why fighting development or up-zoning somet...

Re: Mozaic (all phases)

The white material on the southwest side looks like a match for the material used on the parking ramp. Can't imagine that getting much praise from people on this board (including me) once it starts going up. If Opus is constructing this, then it would fit perfectly with their (lack of) style. I do t...

Re: Saint Paul - General Topics

The old mid-century Woolworth's building at 428 Minnesota is finally going to get some love. http://www.twincities.com/2016/04/27/st-paul-woolworths-building-mad-men-makeover/ Interesting to note, it was STILL leased. Wahh? Woolworth’s long-term land lease expired last year, giving the building own...

Re: 419 Washington Ave N - 10 story office

Staff is recommending approval with the condition that any part of the building facing a primary street be lined with an active use (e.g., office) instead of with parking. This would make it better, although I agree that since the street level is relatively active and the parking might not be too ob...

Strib actually has a relatively decent piece discussing pedestrian safety in the metro: http://www.startribune.com/in-crashes-that-kill-pedestrians-the-majority-of-drivers-don-t-face-charges/380345481/ No discussion of how the built environment affects pedestrian safety (other than what is implied b...

Re: Stadium LRT Station, Ped Bridge & Plaza (MSFA block)

There are some specs related to tge plaza on the msfa rfp website. My (non-expert) reading of them is that there will be a raised concrete plaza on top of the underground ramp with stairs down to the street. Not so sure about the precast concrete forms on the other side of the lrt platform. Could th...

Re: Alatus St. Anthony Tower (Washburn-McReavy Site)

The neighborhood != the district. You can look at the map here . I recommend it! The district has two towers. Those towers are the reason the district was created. Wait a second...what am I missing? According to the map, the Carlyle (~2006) is in the district and the district was created in 1971. A...

Re: New Ulm

And there hasn't been a grocer there for decades...since before I was born (1980). I'm not sure it ever has. According to my father (my family has been in New Ulm since 1854), prior to the large format grocers with massive parking lots they have now (and for as long as I remember), all of the grocer...

Re: New Ulm

So was the downtown retail that preceded it. (Chronicled on the New Ulm Now and Then Facebook page) I'm not a huge fan of big box retail, but I grew up in New Ulm in the '80s and '90s and downtown today is at least as full of successful retail establishments as I remember it back then. So, I'm not ...

Re: Nye's Redevelopment - 116 E Hennepin Avenue

Also, they want the sixth floor color on the addition to more closely match (or resemble...for lack of a better word) the color of the proposed brick for the addition. Another improvement recommended by staff is use of bric...

Hennepin County board approved funding for this yesterday and it looks like jersey barriers are going up today. The parking lot on this block (bordering Chicago) has been empty for the past few days. I'd say demolition/construction are imminent.

You're not really arguing anything. I'm arguing that these responses - why aren't these people doing what I think they should be doing - are symptom of the problem. Sometimes, they are a deliberate strategy to deflect from the issues being raised. Other times, they are innocent reaction that has th...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

Regardless of your take on BLM's strategy and tactics overall, it seems this event in particular may be more harmful to the cause than supportive. Which is what people said about the Fair protest. And every other protest. From the outside, I think it's important to be very careful about substitutin...

His point is that people have always been marketing a different kind of living. I'm not sure there's much value in discussing fairness ...
