Re: 77th/76th Corridor - Richfield / Edina

I have a friend who has an apartment here, so I've been inside quite a few times. It's definitely worn and needs work, though it's not falling apart or anything like that. It's like a lot of older apartment complexes in the suburbs that were the Elans, Limes, and Blues of their day but are showing t...

Re: Suburban Malls and Associated Retail News

Very interesting. I had no idea Burnsville Center had a lower vacancy rate than Rosedale, and that Southdale's was still so high.

Re: Bernie Sanders

I think Kline's retirement definitely puts that district in play and it's not a given that the Republicans will keep it, particularly since it will be a Presidential election year and the district has narrowly gone for Obama in the past. Especially since there don't seem to be a lot of people on tha...

True. Her arguments are stronger when she refers to suburbs in general.

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

Of all the suburbs she picked to defend, she picked Lakeville. As another Lakeville native (#gopanthers) who still occasionally spends time there, she had some valid statements, though she was off on some things too. Like the driving distance to downtown -- yeah, not gonna happen even with no traff...

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

How dare those liberals living in Murderapolis, boondoggle land, spout clichés. Where's the parking, amiright?
How about we agree that it's stupid when anyone does it?

Well, if they're in IT, then I'm assuming they have skills that are in demand and will probably be fine, especially if the severance packages are still decent.

Re: Roseville / Rosedale - General Topics

I shop at JCP once in a while; they can have some good deals and my GF likes their housewares. But we are often on the younger side of the people shopping there. The thing about JCP is that they know they need to change, it's that their core customer base doesn't want them to, even though that custo...

Re: Target Campus - Brooklyn Park

Indeed, when I worked at Target HQ downtown, I passed up an opportunity that would have been in Brooklyn Park because I live in the south metro and the commute would have been way too long for my liking, not to mention tough to do using transit. Even with their current issues, though, they're still ...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market

It will probably be easier to find space for all of them at TNC, though. Plus they might need the space they have in TPC if they pull back from City Center. I'm sure they have open space downtown now, but it's likely scattered around.

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

Yeah, I understand people want that. But it's really tough for developers to make it worth their while for SFHs under $200. It's sort of like apartments... they start out as luxury then move downmarket over time. https://streets.mn/2012/09/24/affordable-housing-is-existing-housing/ Oh, it's still p...

Why are those "must-have's"?

Most can get along just fine without those conveniences.
Everyone's version of a must-have is different, and they change over time.

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

What's the point of building new $120k homes when there are piles and piles and piles of existing homes in that price range? Even in metropolitan areas?
Because people don't want existing single family homes, they want new homes. I can understand why, even though it's not what I would do.

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

If you look at what the original Levittown house cost, it was around $120,000 in today's dollars. Nowadays just try to buy a new construction single family house for that. There's enough blame to go around, though. Cities with their zoning, builders trying to maximize profit, and buyers who think i...

Wasn't there a 50s diner with kitschy rude waitresses on the ground level as you walked in the Sam Goody entrance on Nicollet?...
That sounds like the Heartthrob Cafe, but it was in St. Paul. It closed about fifteen years ago. Unless there was a 50's diner in downtown Minneapolis too.

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

I've spent very little time in EP and don't have much opinion of it one way or the other, but in fairness, I'll point out that they have numerous restaurants that are WAY better than Applebee's (and I know there's at least one of those left in Minneapolis).

What's the deal with Apple Valley? Not invited? Or did they decline the invitation? They're practically surrounded and they have a zoo...hmmm.... Re: Lockheed Martin site - Eagan

Again from an Eagan tax payer's point of view, they will have to pick up the lost tax revenue down the road. Their properties will have to pick up the lost revenue lost because Eagan did not get the best tax revenue "Bang for the Buck" with all of the wasted land. I hate to inform Eagan t...
