Re: The Vintage (Selby and Snelling)

The residential space will be open in December with a respectable number of leases already signed, but the Whole Foods will take longer. Whole Foods told me late April, though Ryan Co. reps told me late winter.

Re: Saint Paul - General Topics

That's...really tempting.

At the very least the city could combine progressive changes with spiting a certain crowd and use the parking meter/bike parking combo poles.

Re: Saint Paul - General Topics

I find these meetings are much more palatable if you simply tune out most of the speakers and instead imagine they're Garth Algar deadpanning "We fear change" and smashing a robot with a hammer. But maybe that's just me. I hope the mayor and council go through with this. They have very lit...

Re: Saint Paul - General Topics

I'm not sure how much of the housing right on Grand, or on the north side of Lincoln, has in terms of private parking. But I know that the south side of Lincoln does have alley parking, frequently in addition to street-accessed driveways and garages. I also know that in my own neighborhood there's a...

Re: Saint Paul - General Topics

If I have to hear about how Grand Ave. is "unique" and what works everywhere else it's done will never work here one more time, I may consider moving to Minneapolis. This meter issue is just embarrassingly parochial now. Although I've gotta say, Grand Ole Creamery is kind of right. Parking...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

Seamonster, then, was presumably referring to tripping accidentally when he said nut all marathoners would be "docile" and we should expect physical violence?

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

People are saying that a marathon runner is more likely to react violently because of a fragile mental state and exhaustion. I pointed this out, and Anondson said nobody was saying a marathon runner was in a "potentially violent mental state". So then you say PRECISELY THAT. I'm pretty sur...

It wouldn't surprise me if they only do one-way. From what I recall from looking into some European cruise options this spring, that's exactly what Viking does there.

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

Bringing us back to "running a marathon makes you more likely to behave violently". The claim Anondson says nobody is making. I'd like to propose, given the lack of judgement running imparts, a list of activities that should be legally prohibited following marathons, for the public's safet...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

It was further implied that there is something special about this case that makes a runner's mental state noteworthy as opposed to that of anyone else. Otherwise, why even bring it up? As you say, we've already seen people make stupid, violent decisions when stopped by a protest. That has, until now...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

Ok, I'll bite. Elaborate on I think there is some underestimating of the mental and physical state of people at the end of their marathon race. Not all are as clear thinking as when they started the run and their physical health is far from stable as when they begin. This could go poorly if some try...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

Given what you're all saying, I'm starting to wonder if it's wise to allow marathons to take place at all, ever. Given the evidently fragile, potentially violent mental state it puts runner in near the finish line,... That was never said in this thread. Oh please. You yourself blatantly implied it.

Given what you're all saying, I'm starting to wonder if it's wise to allow marathons to take place at all, ever. Given the evidently fragile, potentially violent mental state it puts runner in near the finish line, why would we be encouraging people to form giant mobs that could so easily turn unpre...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

Why hasn't BLM's track record to date earned any benefit of the doubt? Have there been physical conflict at any of the prior protests? Absolutely none. Oddly, I still see Strib commenters turning around and saying that blocking traffic (while black?) is a form of violence. Never let facts get in th...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

While the organization needs work (and is developing over time), I'm pretty positive there's been a well publicized end game from the beginning - police need to stop disproportionately murdering black people. Has that really not been well publicized enough, because I kinda doubt anyone in this count...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

I would however support the use of rule #9 in community organizing. But they don't have a clear enough achievable goal leading to one specific outcome, that's the hardest thing about their organization. Why do people keep repeating the "BLM has no specific endgame" line when it's blatantl...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

Maybe it is my ox being gored, but the marathon has the following attributes: 1) It is free to attend. 2) It celebrates athletic achievements of ordinary people from all walks of life 3) It brings a sense of civic togetherness for both spectators and runners that happens rarely, if ever, outside th...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

To be fair, I'd probably be more sympathetic if races and marathons weren't routinely interrupting life on my street. I love being told I can't go to the bakery and dry cleaners (or at least I need to go nearly a mile out of my way on foot) because a bunch of people from out of town rented a major a...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

I have heard that the best way to affect public opinion is to stay out of sight of the public. I think the marathon should find an empty parking lot somewhere nearby but where nobody will be seen or heard. That way they can pretend that they worked with BLM organizers and offered an acceptable comp...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

I'm not sure taking the word of a handful of black people you personally know and have commented that way as somehow representative is much better. I mean, Ben Carson doesn't think racism is real. That doesn't mean he's right.
