Re: Road Crime

No, but that doesn't mean a cyclist is a risk to others at the same magnitude as the driver of a vehicle. The risks and responsibilities are very different. Also, I'm NOT defending reckless cycling. I'm just making two points. Careful rulebreaking on a bicycle is not the same thing as being reckless...

Re: Road Crime

Again, cyclists behaving irresponsibly makes me the cyclist less safe. Why is that so difficult to understand? Yes, bicylists behaving irresponsibly make them less safe. But you've equated irresponsible to illegal and they are not the same thing. Also, taking risks that jepordize your own safety is...

Re: Road Crime

Not looking and running into you was stupid. People are taking issues with your broader implications. Also, coming to a complete stop at every single stop sign on a bike is a stupid way to ride. It's just simply unnecessary. The stop signs were placed with autos in mind, and sometimes don't make sen...

This is in the direction of a less adversarial and more enlightened approach. Want to activate public spaces? Purposely build your sculptures and benches to be skateable.

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

I think St louis Park and Hopkins are among the better stops, though they're not exactly walkable. West Calhoun is so suburban stripmally I'm not sure that would qualify as walkable urban either. Hiawatha goes through a lot of low density stuff, but it also has the West Bank, Franklin and Lake Stree...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

I agree there's not enough data to show a statistical correlation; it's just my theory based on the data points we have. Clearly SW will have many more riders than Northstar. I just expect it to underperform forecasts because it mostly stops in areas with transit hostile land uses and few existing t...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

The trend has been to underestimate urban ridership and overestimate suburban ridership. So does Southwest more closely resemble the destination rich existing Blue and Green Lines or the more suburban Northstar and Red Line? I'd hope for the results like the former, but given the transit amenable ur...

[sarcasm] Maybe he should run menards as a non profit, just to give back to the community [/sarcasm] Is that so crazy? Not that Menards should be non-profit, but I just can't imagine why one wouldn't direct their efforts to philantrophy at that point. Is there no greater cause than just getting ric...

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minneapolis

Right, but do you think the primary purpose of owning an MLS team is to make money? Why wouldn't he just invest in a hedge fund and save the trouble?

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minneapolis

The thing is, even with a lock on property taxes, the owners don't expect to turn a profit on team/stadium operations. They're betting on the value of the team to appreciate. If they don't have a lock on taxes, it leaves a big question mark on financial viability I guess I simply don't understand w...

Re: Upper Mississippi -- No Locks For You

So tell me, if this is really about the lowest cost way to keep the carp out, then why did the DNR already spend $16 million to retrofit the Coon Rapids Dam specifically to keep the carp out? http://www.startribune.com/coon-rapids-dam-project-aims-to-keep-the-asian-carp-out/200542641/ Again, i'm no...

Re: Upper Mississippi -- No Locks For You

As someone who watched the Asian Carp issue being debated and pass through Congress, I can assure you this is primarily about carp. The potential for environmental devastation is huge and would affect economic activity over a very large area. Potential Minneapolis riverfront development is just not ...

So, after spending a few (iphoneless) days backpacking in the wilderness, I just wanted to circle back to this topic and make a few points. 1) After apparently arguing in favor of vandalism and injuring the public with skateboards, I walked to the light rail station on Friday only to be nearly run-d...

$50 millions on outdoor seatings??? How much did you pay for your couch? Yep, but $50 millions to seat about 200 people is only $250 thousands per chair. You'd know that's a pretty good price if you've ever bought outdoor commercial furniture. Our city is home to all these types of people. The prob...

Re: Skateboarding

Wow, hit a nerve. I think it's funny that people jump to the "and then you grow up" angle and #entitledmillennials. Further supports my suspicion that a lot of people see this issue via the smelly kids at their high school from way back. Like if only you had a family you'd be yelling get o...
