Re: House of Hanson Site (14th Avenue SE & 5th Street SE)
I really, really like this. I don't think the housing will be any cheaper than surrounding areas :) but I really think this is an improvement to the street experience (it's better than HoH and 1,753x better than the surface lots). Any of the businesses could easily re-locate within here, it provides...

Re: Vikings Stadium
Minneapolis in general is relatively progressive when it comes to architecture. I hope hope hope that they make a statement with their design. I have a horrible gut feeling that it will look like a normal bland stadium. I just want them to go crazy with it. Hopefully you don't mean something like t...

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor
OK cool, I'll move someplace where I can take transit throughout the city instead of just on a tiny symbolic tourist trolley. Have fun in your car-choked hellhole. Then why would anyone, anywhere, ever build streetcars if buses could do it just as well? Are there no redeemable qualities about stree...

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor
All of us regularly choose to pay more for amenities - instead of buying the 99 cent per kilo horsemeat burgers the Europeans just learned about, we choose to eat food that tastes good; instead of keeping the old TV from 1990 with a set-top box we choose to buy a new flat screen. Of course we somet...

Re: University of Minnesota
As a student who works with FM, I make 10 and hour doing the exact same job full timers do who get paid at least twice what I do and get benefits. It is a bit wonky Just like as an engineering intern, I got paid 1/3 what an entry-level engineer would get (if you annualized my salary) and I did 95% ...

Re: Vikings Stadium
so place your bets on who will be chosen. i think they'll go local with mortenson, but it's really close. i think there will a movable wall but not a retractable roof. exciting to see this design in just a few weeks. this is either going to be a game changer for the cityscape or a major bummer. I t...

Re: U.S. 52
I'm 31 and have one child and another on the way, and we don't want a half acre home with a white picket fence. We want a place that's safe and where there is SOME green space for kids to play, but we don't need very much. Currently (and we're not happy with our current living situation), our backy...

Re: University of Minnesota
Dining services contracted out is an example.. the cost per meal for the average dining plan is much higher than one could do by themselves buying groceries I'm curious if you have some insight to some of the numbers inside the U. The price per meal would be higher if the work wasn't contracted out...

Re: University of Minnesota
It's obvious you've got some pretty strong anti-union bias here. I've interacted with quite a few union FM employees, and they've all dedicated hard workers. The case where nobody was assigned to our room was a problem of administration, not the front line employees. In fact, two custodians (these ...

Re: U.S. 52
It will continue to sprawl if we keep subsidizing sprawl. Rochester has a huge unique opportunity to become a small/midsize city with great urbanism. Lots of downtown jobs, lots of younger people, and lots of people who want to live in a place that feels like a place. Well....then it's a good thing...

Re: 2601 Lyndale Ave S (vacant lot, former hardware store)
Why is it just fine to continue building places that are unappealing for anyone that doesn't want to own a car, but when we try to revert places back to who they were originally built for (people) it becomes an issue for you? I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at there, besides poking at the ...

Re: 2601 Lyndale Ave S (vacant lot, former hardware store)
the entire neighborhood still preferred they seek a waiver on parking requirements from the city, and that was voted on unanimously as the neighborhood's preference. Wow, Whittier has changed for the better since I moved away 5 years ago. On the other hand, this is on Lyndale rather than Nicollet. ...

Re: Saint Paul streetcar study
If we had infinite (or just a lot) of money, I'd say go for it. Since we don't, I'd rather see resources spread across the city rather than doubled up on the same corridor. I know they serve different purposes, but it would be unfair for one important corridor to have two fancy modes of transit and...

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor
I am curious - how would a streetcar reduce connectivity? With stops every 2 blocks, you can never be more than one block away from a stop (granted, spacing is a bit wider towards the ends). But people really do prefer trains. Why fight that? Would the marginal time savings from enhanced bus servic...

Re: Saint Paul streetcar study
Why can't streetcars and arterial BRT exist in the same corridor? Streetcars would do well to serve the local stops, be the extension of walking - ie you hop on when it's convenient and it saves you 5-10 minutes in your would-be 10 block walk. When you need to hike all the way from Randolph and Lexi...

Re: University of Minnesota
Agreed, very well said. But there still are layers within the University (Facilities Management in particular) that need to be cut. What in particular about FM would be cut? Do you mean outsource managing all facilities? Is this a proven cost-saver? I would argue that the things they have outsource...

It's one of the main purposes of HOV/HOT lanes and bus-only shoulders... providing a transit advantage. Anyone who has been on an express bus on 35W or Cedar Ave knows what I'm talking about... the satisfaction of flying by people stuck in their cars. Until some jackwagon with a MnPass juts out rig...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)
That's true, although I'm hesitant for such large facilities to locate downtown because they require superblocks that can get in the way of neighborhoods. The Heywood Garage and the Green Line facility will both be mistakes in the next couple decades as North Loop/Lowertown fill out and start pushi...
