Re: StoneBridge (2nd Street South & 11th Avenue South)
I'm willing to bet there is a positive correlation between those who "try" the city by renting somewhere like Uptown, and those who wind up eventually buying a home inside city limits, versus moving out to the burbs. For the purposes of this, I wouldn't count living on/near campus during ...

Re: Return Downtown Streets to Two-Way
As a pedestrian, I like the one ways because they are so much easier to jaywalk. I agree. One-ways do seem easier to jaywalk midblock. Maybe I'm just a worry wart, but I try to look both ways before crossing one-ways as a result of having frequently seen people driving the wrong way down them. Yep,...

Re: StoneBridge (2nd Street South & 11th Avenue South)
As a dude in his early 30's, I can tell you that despite my best efforts, if we had started in downtown before we had kids it would not have mattered one iota to the wife who prefers that our kids grow up with (some) green space a few steps away and obviously, the best schools we can afford to live...

Re: Vikings Stadium Legislation/Financing Package
Nope, Rybak consistently advocated for the dome site. It was the downtown council and county that pushed the west downtown sites.

Re: Return Downtown Streets to Two-Way
When the Marq2 project was built, Marquette and 2nd became way more pleasant. I'm generally in favor of converting one-ways to two-ways, but I would have never thought the conversion with double contra bus lanes would be such a dramatic improvement. Also, it's already hard to remember how terrible H...

Downtown Demographics
That's a good point, TWA. I think most people who *think* they'd like to live downtown would be better off renting before buying. Even just renting an apartment for a year could really give you an idea of what to look for in a downtown condo. Which neighborhood do you want to live in? What building ...

Re: Vikings Stadium Legislation/Financing Package
Forbes has speculated that Zygi Wilf (not including his co-owner brother) is worth a few hundred million. This is before taxpayers padded the value of his NFL team, and during the depths of a real estate recession. As a big-time property owner/developer his holdings can be difficult to value and are...

Re: Vikings Stadium Legislation/Financing Package
Not ideal? We got hosed, but whatever? What's done is done, at the end of the day we'll paying for this for decades to come? I realy don't understand people's attitude about this stadium. Minnesota could have made a stand against this billionaire extortion with very little risk of losing that shitty...

The Star Tribune reports Walmart intends to build a new store in Blaine about 2,000 ft from its existing store. The existing store is much too small at only 142,000 square feet, so Walmart wants a to build a 180,000 square foot store on the other side of the 35W interchange. Plus, building new woul...

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT)
The Star Tribune reports use of the 35W MnPass lanes is on the rise. 9,217 people have electronic toll accounts to use the I-35W managed lanes, which is on track to match the 12,800 account holders who use I-394. Because they offer an alternative to sitting in traffic and move 50 percent more peopl...

Re: Loring Park Apartments - (1368 LaSalle Avenue)
Is anybody else sort of skeeved by an indoor dog run? Even the small outdoor ones (like at Skyscape) get so pee and feces ridden my dog won't go near it (and she's usually super-into disgusting stuff). Do any other buildings in town have an indoor dog park? Doesn't this one look way too small?

Re: Vikings Stadium
I don't want to get into this too much, but it really did seem like the "well, we didn't want development over there anyway" line got thrown out kind of randomly in the midst of things. I think I (and by extension many of our long time posters) am pretty aware of the city and its history,...

Re: Vikings Stadium
Thanks for responding to the zoning question and providing the link. However, that quote from Sam Grabraski (in the height of last spring's stadium push) regarding not creating a competing entertainment district is not convincing. First, I don't know what high-tech zoing entails but I'd guess that c...

Re: Vikings Stadium
It's been widely reported that Downtown East was not zoned to encourage development in order to build up the CBD. Maybe the zoning has changed now, but apparently in the past it wasn't. I remember Rybak saying this last spring, but it sounds like BS. Can anyone provide a contemporaneous source that...

The current headline was not the one that attracted 249 comments blasting Rybak's misplaced priorities. Nor was the short linked article the only one on the subject (although it's the only one I can find now). And I’m not disputing the reporting, I actually think Roper is a pretty good journalist. W...

Re: Uptown Projects Map
I mostly agree with you MNdible. By and large the Star Tribune's Minneapolis coverage is decent (not to be confused with uncritical). In my comment above I defended the Uptown article in question. Though, I stand by my assertion that they sometimes consciously throw city-haters red meat. Remember Er...
