Re: TC Habitat for Humanity - (1954 University Avenue)

I like this building. The likes and dislikes of this forum are so random. People seem to hate this thing and Murals in Lynlake, and love Brunsfield Place, yet all three are similar in style.

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

We could have built the Green line through the railroad ROW north of University. It would have been cheaper, it would have been less disruptive, specifically because it was a bad routing that wouldn't serve the areas that need it. When I first moved to the Twin Cities in the late '80s this was bein...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

There are a lot of people in Minneapolis who do want this built in their neighborhood. It is just that they live in Uptown and Whittier, not Kenwood... There are a lot of people in Uptown who like to see this built through Whittier. Uptown gets all the benefit with no negatives, while in Whittier, ...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

What we need is some real old fashioned political leadership. Yes there is plenty of blame to spread around, but if our new mayor really wants to get this built, then she'll need to be bold and risk offending some of her core constituents: the cidna cohort who "favors transit" as long as ...

Re: Uptown Retail News

Usually when a retail space on a busy street stays empty for a long time it is because the owner has misjudged the market or the value of their space and wants too much for it. If the rent is low enough the space will always fill.

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

Seems like the majority opinion is now that people don't want SWLRT built unless it built somewhere more useful then Kenilworth. In most of my circles, not just progressive urbanists, seems like it's actually a very small group of people that DO want it built, period. This is the problem, it is a l...

Re: UrbanMSP-esque sites in other cities

City Data is awful but Skyscrapercity isn't bad, although it's most interesting areas have nothing to do with urbanism. Skyscraperpage is better than either. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/index.php I find that discussions here are sometimes a bit insular in their perspective (for example a lot of ...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

Would the denial of municipal consent impact federal funding in any way? Does the federal government have a track record of funding LRT lines that were opposed by some of the communities they went through?

Re: Franklin & Lyndale Redevelopment

I love this development. It will be great for the neighborhood. I especially love the fact that it goes all the way down to the older buildings on the southern half of the block - creating a nearly uninterrupted full block of storefronts. In a perfect world I think most of Lyndale should be like tha...

Re: The Eclipse

I wonder if the main issue is that it has a mediocre rendering? Most people here don't have any artistic training and lack the eye realize that things like this are dependent on the quality of the person doing the rendering and shouldn't always be taken literally. The thing is in monochrome, we don'...

Re: Seward Co-op Friendship Store - (38th St & Clinton Ave)

Most produce destined for supermarket shelves or restaurant use is shipped by truck, not by train. Trains are used for grains, other bulk goods and foods destined for industrial processing. I was the head chef of the French Meadow for three years. Because of the price points we were trying to hit I ...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

In a hundred years all the various racial and economic communities will be living in different places (if they even exist at all in today's sense) but the light rail line will still be where we build it today. The primary goal should be to build a line that makes sense within the built environment.

Re: Uptown Restaurant News

The issue the Muddy Paws/Pasquale's space had as a restaurant was parking, which is to say that it had none. Despite what a lot of posters here might think, parking is very important for restaurants in Uptown. The area is oversaturated with restaurants in terms of neighborhood demand so it is depend...

Re: Subsidized Housing

Rents aren't too high, it is wages that are too low. The long term solution is to raise wages, rather than build subsidized housing. Ultimately, this is the root of the problem: https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQvpYx_18Ppet_m7ILEVeRuRdULt-kx019qZ2V9S0M69XSu0QA6 The solution requ...

Re: Uptown Restaurant News

I went to Nico's last night. Overpriced, sure, but what isn't these days? I don't want to start an argument but I just wanted to say that restaurant food today isn't generally overpriced. Prices are a reflection of the cost of production. Restaurants are a low margin business at best, many places t...

Every time there is a recession it seems like we have catastrophic budget deficit that forces major spending cuts. I think we should put every penny we can into the rainy day fund and end that cycle for good.

Re: Buzza Lofts of Uptown (and Phase 2 too!)

In a perfect world, it would be nice to see a couple home ownership developments near the Greenway in Uptown to balance out the rental. My only worry is there too much concentration of one housing option which may be unhealthy in the long term. On the other hand Uptown is full of buildings that wer...

You see a dump and I see Art Deco and Moderne. I follow architectural styles so to those that do the same, this is an example that we happen to think is worth saving. Funny how 30 years ago those hot warehouses were considered a waste land and should best be bulldozed. That is your opinion of the S...
