So I'm working on a list of all the good and bad for cities, our streets, our built environment, our transportation folks think will come from AV revolution...will post for comments in a few days.

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars
Waymo is already taxing people around Phoenix without drivers just fine - not that they won't have accidents, but overall - Google seems to have already figured this out at least for a city like Phoenix. And they are starting to test in other cities. Everything that makes AVs work keeps getting bett...

Re: Art and Architecture Building Redevelopment - 3338 University Ave SE - 17 Stories / 195'
I don't think the view of the witches hat at the site, or on University Ave would be the concern, but rather the other places around the neighborhood, from a distance, Tower Hill and the Witches Hat are visible and 17 stories could sort of photo bomb that. Not end of the world, but sort of a loss. B...

Re: Prospect Park - General Topics
I've read about it elsewhere - I distinctly remember the plans for second grocery store.
The neighborhood could easily support two stores.

Re: The Link at Prospect Park - 2929 University Ave SE
Fresh Thyme appears to have both underground parking entrance right near LRT station and surface parking in the back, off of Fourth Street. They have escalators up from the underground parking like thev've done in other stores. Have to say, I like the underground parking option for coldest part of w...

Re: Art and Architecture Building Redevelopment - 3338 University Ave SE - 17 Stories / 195'
I see I'm in the minority in the tallness thing :) - Its not a huge thing, I've argued for tall buildings a lot around my town St. Paul (Ford site, and see how a few tall residential buildings amongst other wise low, traditional buildings work just fine - see Grand, Payne ave in St. Paul etc) so I t...

Re: Phalen Village
Why is it everytime St. Paul redevelops former industrial areas, it turns then into suburb replicas? Shoot, Woodbury aspires for more density, walkability and mixed use in the stuff they have turned over recently than supposedly urban St. Paul does. To me this looks a like a another strip mall. This...

Re: Art and Architecture Building Redevelopment - 3338 University Ave SE - 17 Stories / 195'
I agree variation in height is good, I think I was advocating for that, just don't get 17 stories at this location a block from two story residential. Something like 8-10 seem more in line with incremental changes and demand but perhaps views are big part of the desire for tall. Again, if this is ty...

Re: Art and Architecture Building Redevelopment - 3338 University Ave SE - 17 Stories / 195'
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather see something like this than then single-story Westgate offices on St. Paul side, if those are the only two choices. I just feels downtown to me. Uptown doesn't even have much like this. Cities seem to need downtown type densities at least one core spot as a response t...

Mega sites worry me. Everything goes in at smart time, with same current fade style and if right mix not picked, can be problem for long while.
17 stories there seems a reach.

Re: The Link at Prospect Park - 2929 University Ave SE
I suspect this will be a very busy store - it is reasonably priced, complete grocery store that is produce centric - but still not a huge store. I shop at the one in Vadnais Heights on way home from work and it's never that busy, I'm guessing this one will be much busier. Whoever made this happen, g...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars
I heard Lidar has issues where light and dark shift, like edge of tunnel and its something they have been working on. And please please, why was the car going 38 mph?!? who designs the car to do that - these are testing phase - they should be going as slow as possible without being hazard to other c...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars
Unrelated to the pedestrian discussion. I had a thought this morning... it's pot hole season. As drivers many of us watch for the BIG ONE and will modify how we drive. Options are usually straddling a pot hole or slightly going over a line. Think we'll see an increase in blown out tires once the dr...

Re: RE: Re: Autonomous vehicles impact on real estate
This is an absolute fail by the autonomous car. She didn't dart out out onto the road quickly, she was out on the road for long before car got to her. It's a dark road but there was time to react, maybe not to stop or swerve away but NO reaction by a car that should have far better sensors than huma...

Re: Autonomous vehicles impact on real estate
If AVs can't improve on humans seeing pedestrians, I agree they that much of the case for them is lost. The standards for them should be way higher, and should be obtainable if we insist on it. That is not to say that AVs will ever avoid all situations that humans would catch - they likely will stil...

Re: Autonomous vehicles impact on real estate
I agree that the standards for autonomous vehicles cars should and will likely be much higher than they are for human drivers (via law suits, legislation, industry standards whatever) and that is a good thing. I just have a real issue with autonomous vehicles going 38 mph on a surface street regardl...

Re: Autonomous vehicles impact on real estate
Negligence will likely be the standard. In this case, fact they had a safety driver still in car, may give them some cover on that. If you judge this by the way they judge human drivers, then given what police are saying, they would not have faulted or charge with a crime the human driver and don't ...
