Re: Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis - General Topics

Wow, that's shockingly terrible and kind of surprising. While it's understandable that good urbanism isn't likely for this location, this seems like the sort of thing that the city hasn't approved in a couple decades. I hope the city is confident enough right now to say no to that specific proposal ...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

So this thread is so long that I may have missed discussion of the new lower speed limits in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. What are people seeing? I'm noticing people driving a little slower, but much farther over the new speed limit than they were driving over the old speed limit before. The lowered ...

Re: Riverview Corridor Streetcar

To misquote Shakespeare, a streetcar by any other name would smell as sweet. The semantics are just that, semantics. Toronto has some "streetcars" that operate more effectively than our "light rail", with their own ROW and nice station amenities. Meanwhile, the St Louis "lig...

It's my clinic, and the only one very close to there. During the Floyd protests, the neighbors were protecting this because it was the only pharmacy in greater Longfellow not to have been essentially destroyed. I'd love to see a more attractive building, but access to healthcare is way more importan...

Re: Midtown Greenway Trail [not the transit thread]

There will be several miles of light rail running in the same corridor as freight rail in the very near future, I'm certain they could design a delivery spot somewhere along that. The Southwest tracks will certainly be operational before the 31st Ave S bridge becomes unworkable.

Re: D Line - Chicago-Fremont/Emerson Rapid Bus

The House has voted to fund it. Before you crack the domestic non-vintage sparkling wine, wait for the Senate to vote and the governor to sign it. If the Senate passes the bill, it will probably be after significant changes that require the two houses to create a compromise before it goes to the gov...

Re: Riverview Corridor Streetcar

Wow, I've been tracking these projects long enough to know that an opening date of 2033 is realistic, but the fact that they're *already* predicting it that far out seems kind of outrageous. To me this seems like a higher-value line than the [s]Bottineau[/s] Blue Line Extension, and it's less expens...

It sounds like they're also planning to build a new branch at the 36th and Lake intersection, I bet at the Tim Hortons location?

Just think of what University and Snelling would look like if they'd been this willing to invest in grade separation when Dubya was president.

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

At least we were primed for the wait by the central corridor, which was also way late with the FFGA -- but not this late. Nice that it finally came through.

The Fieldhouse is available to members of the U's rec center whenever it's not in use for IA, but I'm often the only one or one of just a few using it, while the horrible rec track on the upper floor of the main rec center is crowded. I'm not sure if people don't know it's there, or if they're intim...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Wow, that's terrible. That would move it from barely workable to useless as an actual travel option and make it just a tourist gimmick. My own experience riding it has been that the majority of people I've talked with weren't tourists taking a train ride - they were people getting somewhere, with so...

Re: George Floyd murder and aftermath

Yeah, based on what we know right now I'm inclined to agree. Frey wasn't up to the task, and was waffling over how to address the crisis. In general I think the governor did pretty well but clearly he, too, underestimated what it was going to take Friday night. All the elected officials were afraid ...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

I was shocked to find the Holiday at Hiawatha and 46th had burned. That's way outside the affected areas otherwise. It was also oddly personal because when she was little my daughter always wanted to go there to wash our car because their car wash had an animated rain drop that she thought was cute.

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

They'll probably soon be retiring the locomotives purchased contemporaneously with when the original second-train studies began, so they'll even be the same thing originally specified.

[edit to note this is wry humor, not a serious suggestion]
