Re: Uptown Hotel Discussion

I went to the monthly CARAG meeting last night, where there was a 45 min presentation and discussion of the new hotel. Many positives and negatives were brought up, but much of the discussion revolved around scale. The developer seemed to pick certain phrases from the Uptown Small Area Plan which s...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

Pardon my French, but I don't give a flying pig's ass if more cops to keep us all safe are "revenue neutral" or not. You're pardoned. If we, as a city, want to hire new cops and dedicate them to traffic enforcement, that's fine. Earlier, it was suggested that this would be a revenue neutr...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

I'm sure you know this, but the courts have ruled that MN statute would have to be changed to allow issuing traffic citations based on cameras. Which could happen, but there's been no interest shown at the legislature thus far. Yes, we certainly could hire more officers, but if they're going to be ...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

As I was crossing over a new marked crosswalk in North loop a month ago, the cars began to slow to a stop for me, but then some maniac swerve around them driving in the bike lane and nearly missing me by a foot or two. I've seen it happen before on 4th St SE and on University. That's the kind of st...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

And I'd wager that if a cop actually saw that happening, they'd pull over the person that did it. The trick is, short of stationing a cop full time patrolling that stretch of Washington Avenue, how do you catch people doing it? Short of that? Maybe more traffic patrolling in general? They don't hav...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

Maybe if they hounded some rush hour drivers in and around downtown the same way it might be better. Of all the times that I’ve seen egregious speeding (of the sort that would realistically end up with the person being pulled over), it has never been during rush hour near downtown. Also: I’m curiou...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

Most traffic fatalities are single car or rural. And to the point two posts above, men are far more likely to be the victims of crime, as are of course lower income people and minorities. There are of course huge conditions on those stats that are difficult to adjust for as the above poster points ...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

Not to mention the fact that we're up to nearly 50 murders in Minneapolis in just this year. According to the department of public safety there were 361 people killed on all Minnesota roads throughout 2014. Just 17 of them were pedestrians and 5 were bicyclists. So I think we can cut back on the Ma...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

/\ this exactly. I'm honestly a lot more likely to be killed by a driver breaking the law than by being shot or stabbed as things currently stand. Their job is to keep order and protect us, and keeping automobile drivers in check is one very necessary part of that. But I know they've got a drug war...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

This is my number one problem with the city of Minneapolis right now. They could easily pay for a few officers' salaries just by hanging out on first ave ne during rush hour. The same goes for lake Street pretty much anywhere in town. And every downtown intersection. And the list goes on and on and...

Re: Traffic Enforcement

This topic should be a streets post. It's been immensely frustrating as a Minneapolis resident who sometimes gets around by notdriving.
Agreed! I emailed streets.mn via the "Contact Us" form. Hopefully we see something!

Re: Traffic Enforcement

I have a hunch North Minneapolis sees a bit more traffic enforcement than other parts of the city, but that's my inner cynic.

I was almost run over walking to the bus today as a work van rounded a corner. Fist is still sore from pounding his window and side panel.

Re: Traffic Enforcement

MPD's first reaction to a tweet I tagged them in re: enforcing moving violations on Hennepin bus/bike lanes downtown was to refer me to Traffic Control. When I expressed confusion as to whether MPD squads pull people over, they responded with a yes. I get the impression (and I don't mean this in a ...

Re: Police traffic enforcement

Traffic control is part of a different department. They do everything but moving violations, which presumably the police still do. There may be a confusion of terms, because if you talk to your councilperson about "traffic enforcement" specifically they're probably going to jump right to ...

Traffic Enforcement

I've tried to get more traffic enforcement in my neighborhood and my councilperson (Elizabeth Glidden) and the crime specialist (Sue Roethele) informed me that the MPD doesn't do traffic enforcement. Is this normal for a city our size? How can we lobby to get this changed? Minneapolis is essentially...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Well, yes, I'd agree those blocks are a big problem... and re-reading Matt's comment, I think I totally misunderstood what he's suggesting. If they're proposing that there be a single westbound lane between 35W and Nicollet, that's going to be really problematic. It stacks up now with two lanes -- ...
