Re: Ceresota Building Aparements

Are they able to put more windows in this building? Or are they stuck with the few windows it already has due to the Ceresota's historic status? Yeah, that was my first thought about this as well. It would be a real shame to lose that iconic sign and completely carve up that facade beyond recogniti...

Re: Regional Service Improvement Plan

As an aside, looking at the performance metrics outlined in the document (which I may be misunderstanding): I'm frankly baffled that the 2 performs so well relative to other lines that I perceive to be high-performing. It's PPISH number is beyond double that of the 4 and the 5. Is this just a functi...

Re: Green Line (Central)

The problem is that invariably the pavement and the manhole will settle at different rates, so no matter how careful you are to get it flush, it'll be off in no time.

Re: Bottineau Corridor (Blue Line Extension)

Just a quick note -- tunneling through sandstone is very affordable, but the stations are really going to get you. Just ballparking here, but I'd guess that track level will be about 60 feet below surface level (20' of top soil, 20' of limestone, 20' of sandstone). For each station you'll need the f...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

Did someone guarantee them that rail traffic would never increase on those tracks? No, in fact, quite the opposite. As Mattaudio noted above, they were in fact promised that the traffic would increase. The reroute of the freight traffic onto Kenilworth was always viewed as a temporary situation, wi...

Re: Mill City Quarter - (300 South 2nd Street)

My sentiments exactly. Can we at least see a rendering that's a bit less, um...."preliminary" before we start bashing this, please?
Yeah, a little water color magic, some kids holding balloons in the foreground, and we'll all love this building.

Re: Mill City Quarter - (300 South 2nd Street)

I'll take your word for it, but there are enough people on here knee-jerk poo poo-ing this building off a poorly scanned, pixelated rendering for me to make a snarky comment.
I know, it was a big softball lobbed up there for you! You're only human, after all.

Re: Hines Office Project - (350 North Fifth Street)

Last I heard they were intending to extend Dock St from Washington to a cul-de-sac below 5th St. So that would be an ideal place to put the more bloated type of drop-off depicted in the renderings. I think there could then be a modification to the 5th St Bridge where they could put a drop-off lane....

What if I told you guys that Jean Nouvel designed it?

What if I told you that the Guthrie is a flat-out awesome building, no matter who designed it?

I know you've got no love for it, Elf, but don't assume that people who appreciate it are weak-minded suckers for a "name" architect.

Re: The Station on Washington - (630 Washington Avenue SE)

It's ideal for developers to keep heights below the threshold where wood could no longer support the heavier materials of a taller building. Not quite. It's not that wood doesn't have the structural capacity to support more floors, it's that life-safety concerns limit the height of a building made ...

Re: Bottineau Corridor (Blue Line Extension)

Honestly, I think the 'fear' of undesirable elements passing through your neighborhood (or passing through undesirable neighborhoods) because of a rail line is... Is such a red herring that I'm not sure why you'd bother bringing it up? The reason that the route through the northside wasn't selected...

You could start here. Or you could just slit your wrists...

Seriously, we probably should cull through some of the better threads where this has been discussed and have it in a FAQ, because it's something that comes all the flippin' time these days.

Re: Hines Office Project - (350 North Fifth Street)

The extent of driveway that they're showing probably isn't necessary, but they'll need to provide for some sort of drop-off / pick-up, because the existing two lane bridge certainly can't accommodate that, and that's the only way you can get to that site by car.

Re: The Station on Washington - (630 Washington Avenue SE)

Why six stories?

We should probably have a FAQ that would answer that question, but long story short, it's economics, building codes, and construction practices, but not zoning.
