Re: Transit News and Happenings
I think this is why a lot of people hesitate to support BRT. Yes, it can be built to the same standards as LRT, but it becomes so much easier to make concessions when it operates in the same infrastructure that a car does. I have no doubt that if the Green Line was BRT that it would run in mixed tr...

Re: Green Line (Central)
Yeah, I get that. Any mass will be subject to the force of gravity, and thus 'hang'. Should have said, "sufficiently straight." guess i was more surprised that the tolerance of the train is tight enough to require what looks a little 'rube goldberg-ish' to the uninformed observer. Thx! It...

Re: Green Line (Central)
Just a minor point, but I think if it's single wire it's not catenary - the term refers to the way the top wire hangs naturally (in a catenary shape), with varying lengths of support wire binding the lower to it, to provide a flat, straight path for the lower wire.

Re: Rochester Transit Line
The PiPress piece from April made it all sound far more nebulous; it sounds like there's little plan in place. They describe the transit investment in terms that sound less transformational: "Improvements to the transit and transportation system -- including new bus routes, a transit station an...

Rochester Transit Line
So the Strib article about Rochester (Mayo) getting its $585m subsidy states that "The county will also fund a $116 million transit line to make it easier for patients and Mayo visitors to move around the community." I know the initial proposal had suggested a streetcar line in the city to...

Is Cocina del Barrio in Humphrey actually open now? My family will be in Humphrey at dinner time waiting for a flight on Friday, and it looks like the best choice.

Re: Midtown Corridor
Can we please just not even acknowledge that idea? At least not in this thread. Yes, that is the best approach. It's hard not to engage it because it shows such a complete, utter lack of understanding of even the most basic factors in transit operation. But engaging it gives it an air of legitimacy...

Judging by the April 19 date, probably not much. This would have already been signed before this proposal was unveiled. How does this affect...everything? http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/p ... point.html

And talindsay, I'll remind you that this line is not even funded yet, much less built, much less ancient history. There are still things to be gained from an adult discussion of the alignment options, and no one is shoving toothpicks in your eyelids and forcing you to read. I skim all the skyscrape...

For all those who keep bringing up the alignment question, please go read, "No Exit" or "Waiting for Godot" and get back to me on why you think I might imagine you ought to read them.

Wow that's addictive. I took a lot of time on my fourth game, no cheating, 30,708 . This time I was able to quickly identify the country in all five cases (Belgium, Chile, Canada, Hong Kong, Russia) and it was just a matter of identifying enough details on street signs to pinpoint the location. Belg...

Re: State transportation financing and tax reform
Gas in Fargo was up at $4.35 when I was there for the marathon this weekend. Now, since I was there in my VW Sportwagen turbodiesel I only spent $3.85 a gallon on diesel and got 52 mpg on my way there and 49 mpg on my way home so I didn't care that the prices on gas were up, but it definitely is not...

Whoa, whoa... slow down. Are you telling me that if the true costs of driving presented themselves people would ride transit? Despite all the reasons people give on how great owning and driving a car is? Lunacy! I agree with you and advocate for much higher levels of transit buildout for the metro,...

Re: Star Tribune Blocks
What if Portland and Park both went two-way, and were built through the park as single lanes in each direction? Perhaps very narrow lanes with a wide median between the two, like a parkway, and with well-marked midblock crosswalks? Maybe that could keep connectivity while making the streets unintim...

Re: Star Tribune Blocks
I think the two buildings look great, the park is a scaled-down-to-Minneapolis Central Park type of amenity, and the neighborhood has the potential to meet Jane Jacobs' ideas about the uses for parks. The parking garage should be wrapped with some kind of active use at least on two sides, ideally th...

Re: Vikings Stadium
Right. But what, beyond expense, is the issue with putting big windows facing north as well? Heat loss from poorer insulation? I'd think, in this building, the concern will be more keeping it cool rather than making sure it's warm enough. Actually, I doubt that's true - remember it has to be heated...

Re: Vikings Stadium
Edit: I see you flipped it around. I thought I was going crazy because I've always known the north facing side to be the cold side. Many plants didn't live very long in my north facing apartment. Ya for a second I just assumed that was the only possible reason why they wouldn't make the whole thing...
