I don't really care, but could you set the permissions on that form so that only Shawn (and anybody else working on it) can see it?

I only read the forums via the 'view unread posts' tab so everything shows up in my queue.
Yep.

Did that fix it? As an aside, that seems (to me) like such a clunky way to view the site.

I don't see it anymore.

On mobile devices I view the forums that way. Since I can pretty easily figure out what forum a topic is in, it's not that different browsing all unread threads in one lump vs browsing through each forum.

Site Uptime

Postby FISHMANPET » January 25th, 2014, 9:01 pm

I'm noticing the site going down quite a bit these last few days, like at least once a day, for tens of minutes at a time. Is anyone else seeing this?

Yes - it is an issue with the specific server that we're hosted on. We've dropped below the minimum required up time from our host so we can ask to switch, which I will be doing now. I will update you on whether we're switching and what to expect for up time. My guess is that someone else that is hosted on the same server is having major spikes in traffic which temporarily takes the server offline. Another possibility is that a portion of the server (unrelated to UrbanMSP) has been hacked, as I'm seeing some weird behavior from some other sites/e-mail programs on the same server. I have taken precautions to ensure UrbanMSP data is secure and backed up. I will update you when I know more.

Aaaaaaaand We're Back!

Postby Shawn » January 29th, 2014, 1:34 pm

Thank you all for bearing with us during this (not so) brief website outage. I would like to give credit for the outage to Site5 webhosting. Human error during routine maintenance corrupted a partition and forced us to roll back to a backup version from the 25th, which took nearly two days since we're evidently sharing a server with every cat picture ever uploaded to the internet (2.6TB backup file).

We should not have lost more than 24 hours of data. We are very sorry for this and will work our hardest to ensure nothing like it happens again in the future.

At this point, if you see any issues with the website apart from a few missing posts, please post in this thread ASAP so I can address them. Otherwise - happy posting!

Awesome! I hadn't realized how many times per day I check this site.

Ditto. My days were so…empty.

P.S. I saw the letter ya'll posted on Twitter. One free month of hosting? One!? They owe you much, much more.

FYI, looks like the database just recovered from a failure, when I connected 10 or 15 minutes ago it said it couldn't make a connection.

What did the error look like?

The formatting of the page looked like this, so it was clearly a phpbb error:
http://nyjoomla.files.wordpress.com/200 ... joomla.jpg
And I believe the error message had something to do with not being able to contact the database. Of course I didn't save the exact error message, but next time it happens I will.

I saw this quite a bit before the huge downtime a few weeks ago, for what it's worth.

So just saw this error when loading the main page, but after I took the screenshot and reloaded the page everything was fine:

Those errors may happen occasionally but they should correct themselves very quickly.
