Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
When did that happen? It's actually been a surprisingly long time since I've been there, given my proximity.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
I'd infer from Skyway Wine & Spirits that opening to the skyway only is allowed.(or skyway perhaps...I'd have to read the exact wording of the statute).
That would be great, but I'm also sure you're right that isn't the plan.I'm sure this is not the plan, but how cool would it be if they opened the liquor store in one of those forever vacant (possibly fake?) retail spaces at Lasalle & 9th or Lasalle & 10th?
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
10th and LaSalle is a stealth child care center - a corporate "backup care" place.State law would require that it have a separate entrance accessible to the street (or skyway perhaps...I'd have to read the exact wording of the statute). It can also be accessible from inside Target, but must be fully enclosed & have doors that close it off from the store, etc (see Uptown Kowalskis, Midway Target, etc)

Love from Minnesota in the IDS Center is back open, as "lōk(ə)l minnesota". Why should apartment buildings have all the fun?

Nordstrom Rack will be opening September 7th, according to new banners in the 7th St. windows.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
I thought they had a plan for the Macy's block? Have not heard about that one or seen any proposals, why so secretive?
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
I don't think they have to submit plans to the CPC if they're not modifying the exterior, so they just didn't bother. They didn't release plans for the 5th St Towers or Walgreen's remodels either, IIRC.

Macy's closed like ten minutes ago. Slow your roll.I thought they had a plan for the Macy's block? Have not heard about that one or seen any proposals, why so secretive?
Q. What, what? A. In da butt.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
I'm sure that they will have renderings at some point - they'll want to build excitement - it may not be so easy to pull in retailers , especially interesting or "destination" type retailers...
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
That building is also chocked full of asbestos so we'll likely find out more when they apply for met council cleanup grants or historic tax credits.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
FYI...not sure the date has been mentioned here, but I guess Barnes and Noble closes Friday.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
Almost all of my book purchases are ebooks now, but I'll really miss having a bookstore downtown. Maybe they'll do like Saks and Nordstrom and come back with a smaller store?

There are 2 bookstores downtown that are small businesses. Use those.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
Do you mean Milkweed and Laurie? Those are not really replacements. There are 2 bookstores downtown that are small businesses. Use those.
Laurie is North Loop, not downtown, and has a quite odd selection of old collectible books. It's fun, but I can't go buy the new Adichie novel, or Black Panther comic.
Milkweed is a better replacement, but is also not downtown (it's further from the IDS than the MIA is), is quite small (700 sq ft vs B&N's 25,000 sq ft), and focused on independent publishers, themselves foremost. Almost half their stock is poetry. Which is great! I love that store. But it's not a replacement.
I will miss having Barnes & Nobel downtown.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
Yeah, I should have said the downtown core. (Though, really, what I meant was "in the same block as my apartment")
And, I was also thinking of a general bookstore vs highly specialized ones. It'll get me to support Magers and Quinn more, now, though.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
There's some hope at least. Amazon coming to Minneapolis could mean that they'll test stores here as well.
Amazon has been opening physical bookstores

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
They won't be having any more of a sale than they currently are, which is 50% off select things. Fiction, non-fiction, etc. books are not on sale, and will not be going on sale. They'll just be going back to the publisher.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News
There is now a large sign saying Nordstrom Rack will open on Sept. 7.
