For reference, per Emporis, Fifth Street Towers I (26 story) is 356 ft, Canadian Pacific Plaza (old One Financial Plaza) is 377 ft and LMP Apts is 376 ft.

This is a rendering of a cancelled twin towered 51-story condo proposal in Tampa from about 2007. It was art deco inspired with an arched bridge at the top. Something similar would probably work well with Ryan's twin towers here. But I doubt it would happen due to the increased complexity of construction, cost, etc.

We could re-route the skyway connections through this hypothetical top-level arched bridge in order to promote street-level activity.

"How do I get to the stadium through the skyway from here?"

"Head that way, then take the elevator up to the 25th floor, cross the bridge, then take the elevator back down, then continue straight."

"Never mind; I'll take the sidewalk."

^^^The Target headquarteres has a skybridge between its two buildings on Nicollet Mall on the upper floors. It doesn't replace the skyway. Minneboy and I are just having some fun with the idea from an aesthetic viewpoint. We realize its not going to happen. .

Are you sure about the Target sky bridge? I swear I have never seen that. And wouldnt make sense since TPS is so much taller than TPN.

It has a cloaking shield. And you thought the light show on top of TPS was fancy.

It's been a couple of years since I've been in there, but I think the skyway is around the 9th floor. If I remember right, the library was in TPN right off the skyway.

Yep, about the 8th or 9th floor. Although I must admit, even though I live one and 1/2 blocks away and walk by at least 365 times a year, I never counted how many floors it was above the street. ;)

It's on the 8th floor of Target Plaza and connects Target Plaza South with Target Plaza North and is only for employees. Acts as quick way to get between meetings/offices within both buildings.

This semester, I am planning on composing a detailed case study and research paper on the effects of permanent road closures in urban areas. My local case is obviously the potential closure of Portland & Park within the Yard. I'm hopeful to find some pretty information that might be useful going forward with the development of this good project!

Does anybody on here know of any other city examples of permanent urban road closure similar to this, or peer-reviewed articles on the subject?

Look at the closing of Nicollet at Lake with the building of KMart. I don't know if that's "pretty" enough? :)

Maybe Church Street at the U of M - has that always been closed to cars? Or how about the closure to autos on S 5th St. near the Hennepin County Gov. Center for LRT in 2003?

A good example would be that of Washington Square PArk in NYC.

Not a closure exactly, but I've always been curious about the conversions of the half-block sections of Wedge avenues to one-way as they reach Hennepin (Colfax, Dupont, Emerson, etc.). I assume this was done to eliminate awkward street crossings but it does reduce connectivity a bit.

Some updated renderings with the additional apartment building on the west end:

It also sounds like they won't try to close park or portland:

Oh, an 85', six-story, multicolored square block of an apartment building on the park block. What a daring thing to propose to frame the skyline from our new signature park.

I'm not one to mindlessly call for moar height but giving up a third of a block of the park would seem to merit more than six stories of generic stick apartments, wouldn't it?

Edit: What he said.
