4Marq - 400 Marquette Ave (313' - 30 Stories)
Re: 4Marq - (313' - 30 Stories)
Remember that this building already has a basement from the old building and parking lot that was there before. They will have less to dig out ,unless they plan to go deeper for more below ground parking. But I thought like the Nic that parking was mostly going above ground.
Don't worry too much about the cranes. I would predict by the time that they are ready for a crane at 4M, the rest of the parking structure will have been assembled and poured. The crane will most likely be down before the other is installed. It seems the last time I was by that there were a lot of the ground floor columns already up for the last half of the parking garage. That should be done by the end of January at the latest I would think.

Mortenson closed on the land. It's as good as a go now. http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/b ... -site.html

Even though not super tall I love the in-fill at this end of downtown.

It has been a long time coming!

Crane is going up.
Re: 4Marq - (313' - 30 Stories)
Is it going into the corner on the Alley?
Re: 4Marq - (313' - 30 Stories)
Thanks for the pic. It showed me a lot. They are working on the ground floor still of the east end of the parking section of Nic, and that it appears that they are taking the exterior off the lower portion of the old 510 building. I really need to get downtown again and see what is up.
Re: 4Marq - (313' - 30 Stories)
I'm surprised that they're putting up a crane the very first business day after closing on the land, but I guess they have little to no foundation work to do, with the basement already there.

They may just have wanted to get it in place before a major snow. I still thing that they will have a few weeks before they actually start using the crane. They have demolition of the old parking area to get out of the way first before they can start foundation work.
Re: 4Marq - (313' - 30 Stories)
Are we sure this isn't a crane for the other half of The Nic on 5th that has hardly been started? Seems unusual to put up a crane for a project that hasn't even done any digging at all yet...What would it be anchored in? Seems like it is for The Nic, but who knows.
Re: 4Marq - (313' - 30 Stories)
I wondered this as well. You usually need to excavate to secure a crane to some part of the foundation. They will have to actually take out the existing basement as it was never engineered for this new tower. Does seem weird that it would be put on this construction site...Are we sure this isn't a crane for the other half of The Nic on 5th that has hardly been started? I just drove by and it looked like the crane was in the Nic lot so I think you may be right.

I walked next to the site today and the crane is clearly in the space of the podium for the Nic. The top of the crane is maybe 80 - 90 feet up, a little higher than I thought it would be, but maybe they were coordinating with Mortenson on that portion. If Mortenson is going to start construction soon some of the pile driving and other equipment may require that the Nic's crane needs to be higher.
Re: 4Marq - (313' - 30 Stories)
It seems odd after the closing that no one is there doing anything at this point on 4Marq.
Re: 4Marq - (313' - 30 Stories)
Perhaps the parking there was on a monthly contract basis? Maybe they plan to start in Dec. and didn't want the ensuing confusion from people wanting to park there? It seems odd after the closing that no one is there doing anything at this point on 4Marq.

Didn't it coincide with the land transaction? The parking revenue probably wasn't worth the hassle of agreements to keep it running under new land ownership if it will break ground shortly.

Jeez, give them a minute! Parking lot is closed, I am sure they will get going soon...They just closed the deal.

Anyone know what this former building was and why it was demolished a decade after being remodeled (only to sit as a parking lot for two decades until 4marq)??
