Just realized that we owe Meg Tuthill a debt of gratitude for this being possible. She blocked TJ's at Lyndale & 27th back in 2011. Had that rezoning gone through, not only would we have lost several old buildings & independent businesses to a suburban-style, mostly parking lot site, but that would have been Minneapolis' only Trader Joe's location. State law prohibits any individual or company from owning more than one liquor store in a single municipality.

Except that Meg Tuthill did not offer to help at all. Pure obstructionist. She was nothing more than a NIMBY, and an arrogant one at that. A first hand source told me that in the face to face meeting between Tuthill and top brass from California, the TJ folks were aghast at her attitude. Good riddance to her. In some since yes, her actions made this happen. And the Washinton and Chicago storre will be one of the highest performing stores in the region. The demographics and density will make it work.

On the other hand, I would have been able to walk to that TJ's store already. I'll still have to take my car or bus/hoof it for a downtown east location. ;)

So... is this thing dead? Or just hopelessly behind schedule.

I don't think either. I don't know that there was any intent to get this one started before spring, if we get into August and we're still waiting, then I could understand the impatience. I think they've been advertising the store as opening in 2017.

This was just approved last July and Trader Joe's made official in October. Way too soon to be wondering if it's dead. Try living life glass half full for once!

Oh look a wrecking review appears to have been filed on March 31st.

Great. Is that similar to a demolition permit? I'm assuming that's for the SE building right?

Still surprised that we haven't seen anything on this. Unless they've started construction and I am not aware. From my understanding Trader Joe's is still anticipated to open in 2017, correct?

http://www.journalmpls.com/news/develop ... east-town/

Sherman Associates is beginning utility work in mid-July on two existing buildings, the Thresher Square and Old Spaghetti Factory buildings, as part of its long-anticipated Thresher Square project. The developer is set to break ground around Sept. 1 on a new approximately seven-story apartment building, dubbed The East End Apartments, that will be home to 180 apartments, a Trader Joe’s grocery and liquor store, and a Jimmy John’s restaurant. Shane LaFave, a senior developer with Sherman Associates, said major renovation work on the Thresher Square building this October will turn it into a 180-room hotel, though a hotel partner has yet to be disclosed. Sherman Associates plans to have the renovated hotel open by the Super Bowl in February 2018. The Old Spaghetti Factory building, where the developer has offices, will largely remain the same during the project and the restaurant will remain open during construction.

In retrospect, the East End is probably a much better name for this general area than East Town.

Or maybe Ryanville, since Ryan is basically rebuilding the entire n'hood.

I rushed over to this thread thinking I'd be first to post, alas, you've beaten me by a minute.

Does anyone know the timeline for completion?

If my memory serves me correct, the Trader Joe's is supposed to open in 2017. If I were to hazard a guess, I would imagine around this time next year.

Completion slated for Q1 of 2018.
No mention of when/if Trader Joe's may open earlier.

Two instances of "Downtown East" in the article to one mention of "East Town". Heh.
