Actually, where people live is 100% based on economics. The reason someone pays $2000 a month for an apartment downtown versus $750 in an exurb is because they place more value on the downtown location. From what you think is a pure dollars and sense perspective we should all live in Houston, but people are willing to pay higher rents in a place because they derive enough value from it that they make an economic profit, or at least break even.

I also agree that we need more housing, and I for one can't wait for this developer to make a profit before something better is built nearby, so this can filter down into more affordable housing.
Stupid questions continued: is that the correct expression, "dollars and sense"? I thought it was "dollars and cents".

Am I wrong?
Were you being ironic?
Are you wrong?

I seriously am not sure now...
Ach, nobody catches my accidental misuse of homonyms in spoken conversation!

I drove past this yesterday and maybe it's just me, but this looks smaller in person that I thought it was going to. Even for 6 stories it seems short. I wonder if it's just that it's a full block that makes it look that way? Anyone else get that impression?

It does look flat right now. I guessing most of that is due to the floor to ceiling building wrap it is wearing. Expecting it to look different to my eyes when the exterior is finished.

I like the shot across the surface lots that line Nicollet just South of the library. It really demonstrates how this project is the first (a catalyst?) in this area that has been D-E-A-D, and that combines two red-hot neighborhoods: the Mills District and North Loop.

I've never gotten the sense this building is smaller in person. Whenever I walk along 2nd Street I get the feeling this thing is big. Not "tall", just "big".

^^^The towers that will anchor the corners will give it more height and a sense verticality that's missing at this point in the construction process. This project is just fine with me in regards to height, however, I do think the vacant lots to the south along Hennepin (towards the entertainment district) should be high rise projects in the future.

Not much change from the last pictures that were posted for this. Looks like the tower in the corner will be metal, not stick. I also threw in a shot from the top of the ramp at Nicollet and 4th.

Is the Whole Foods section on the Hennepin side going to be closer to the street than the residential part? I thought that wall was going to be one long, straight wall, but the construction so far looks like it will be wider on the south end.

I think it was cold weather related since their groundwork has been completed for sometime now. Strib says a good chunk of downtown is waterless.

Getting a lot of calls about water being out... Looks like a lot of people across Elliot Park and Stevens Square are being affected.

Butler Square, TCF Building and HCMC are out. A friend of mine on 40th St near Bryant is out of water as well.
