The 801 Chophouse has a sign saying Now Open. I’m really disappointed that they have the windows completely covered with what looks like interior wood shutters or sliding panels.

So did we talk about this? The 801 Chophouse didn't take their name from the address, 801 Nicollet Mall S. It's the name of the chain and just a coincidence that they landed at that address.

Yes, it was discussed when they announced taking this spot. Works well for them regardless!

I think that might be a better spot for it. Where it is now, it seems it would get a lot of business on game/concert days, but not many other times.

From what I've heard ETR really didn't offer anything all that special, so there was really no reason to head there other than game days. More options in this part of town now makes them a harder sell. A bit more effort and creativity and someone else could find success in this location.

It was a great location for a bar when the Twins played 81 games at the Metrodome.

But, darnit, where am I doing to grab a beer on my way home from Williams Arena, having missed my connection to the 14 and having a half hour to kill before there's another one?

This isn't a bad location. It's right next to HCMC. The largest employer downtown. It's also a few blocks from quite a few large residential building and there is a new apartment building next to it that is almost complete. This could be a really successful spot for someone that could make this a regular option for the neighborhood and the hospital.

Might make sense for a diner or something, but I'm not sure the workers, patients and visitors to the hospital or the new residents of the (subsidized? income restricted? both?) new housing are going to be enough to support a craft beer or sports bar.

Right. I'm thinking this will be vacant for an extended period of time, unfortunately.

A Diner of the Uptown Diner variety would be good here. North Central University is also nearby in addition to HCMC. Or maybe the Wilf's will buy it and turn the whole thing into a permanent Vikings themed bar like their Longhouse. They could expand the place, add a rooftop patio for "tailgating etc etc. (The Longhouse by the way probably took revenue from Erik The Red.)

How does that differ from Band Box a few blocks away?

It's an old building with existing kitchen infrastructure in place. It should be relatively cheap space where a new restauranteur could plug in easily. Hope sooner rather than later.

Honestly surprised no one has proposed they just redevelopment the lot. It's 15,500 sqf across from the stadium. East Town apartments is going up next door, two blocks away they hope to convert to apartments, the medical examiner is moving (has moved?) to Minnetonka, AND 7th/8th have BRT now.

Band Box is way smaller, more limited of a place than the Uptown Diner.

Ike's is closed permanently.

They tried to blame their closing on crime just like Rojo did.

That's a stretch, and you know it.
Here are the facts:
Citing failed lease negotiations with the building owner, Ike's proprietor Gene Winstead said he's disappointed they could not agree on a new rental arrangement after "extensive" talks that began in July. According to court records, the owners of 50 South Sixth Street served the restaurant with an eviction summons on January 10. According to Winstead, the negotiations were meant to "address restaurant and market conditions" impacting Ike's bottom line, including "labor costs, operational costs, maintenance costs and taxes."

He finished by citing: a perception of downtown Minneapolis as unsafe for evening diners. "There is a little truth to it, but it's mostly perception," he said.
Ike's has been downtown for 18 years. I think it's misleading and unfair to post the article link and then make a claim that seems unwarranted.

That's not what the article actually says. He cites failed lease negotiations meant to "address restaurant and market conditions" such as labor costs, operational costs, maintenance cost and taxes. All legitimate concerns. The only time he addresses crime, the article says: "He also cited a perception of downtown Minneapolis as unsafe for evening diners. 'There is a little truth to it, but it's mostly perception.'"

Can't the city do something to help the restaurants and small businesses Downtown?
