I think that was part of the TCF Urbanmsp thread a few years ago… talk was about TCF possibly building a 600 ft tall building and even some speculated that it might be a super tall. They made a huge step in marketing and in positioning them for growth when they bought the naming rights for the U of M stadium.

At one point I was told that Chase Banking was going to move into our market and that TCF was the most likely acquisition. That information was from a banking insider that I knew through AMEX and Ameriprise… haven't heard anything since...

I've never heard the rumors, but this does seem like a very plausible scenario if TCF was looking to sell itself. It's weird that only one of the Big Four banks have a presence here, no? Only WF is here; Chase, BoA, and Citi are all absent from consumer banking. USBank is a relatively distant #5, but growing. TCF is the most obvious target if any of the big banks were looking to grab a share of the MN market.

It might have been retired banker who had also posted about this. I do know that this is a desirable market to the big three.

Interesting, the Strib called it an early 20th century building. Looked it up and it's from 1931. That frightful facade must have been slathered on in 1974 when the tower was built.

Hopefully it won't be another building whose presence is abusive to Foshay.

And here it is. It related stylistically to the Foshay podium, but it had a lot more pizazz. The building had a 60 car auto garage in the sub-basement.

Agree 100%. I think any new redevelopment of the TCF complex is bound to come under close public scrutiny given its sensitive site adjoining our most beloved skyscraper. I'm sure the developers are very aware of this and hopefully will respond with a good design that better complements the Foshay.

It would have to be a very slender tower, I would imagine. Maybe a residential building with a better street presence would work here, rather than more office space. More residents in this part of DT would be great.

^^^They have a great Indian restaurant in that building so it's not all bad. 1900 Pacific has some of the glassy modernism so prevalent here yet the massing has references to some of our art deco architecture and Pelli's Wells Fargo Center. Actually fits better with our city than Dallas.

Anyone have the who/what/why/when on that building? It's...odd. Not unattractive per se, just random in the center of the CBD and relatively new looking. There's really not much like it. I wonder what the rents are like...it's kind of low on the amenity/luxury meter for downtown living, aside from being on the skyway.

Should we change the title of this thread to reflect that the TCF Tower won't really be changing? Sure, there will be a new office tenant in 2016 (hopefully), but the tower portion won't be redeveloped. Only the 4-story "TCF Bank" building would be torn down for redevelopment. Any announcement of a new TCF Tower tenant is unlikely to generate much excitement, and that announcement could go in the "Downtown Office Market" thread. What should we call this one?
