Re: Current & Proposed Downtown Minneapolis Projects
I noticed those buildings too. It's at least fun to look at for now and something big will go there eventually.
Re: Current & Proposed Downtown Minneapolis Projects
It would also be best that the next super tower should be in the core and near the Nicollet Mall.

Yes -- but will it have the power to kill a yak from 200 yards away? With mind bullets?

Looks like John Rimarcik is going to do some facade improvements to the beautiful but neglected 21 Third Street North building.

Re: Current & Proposed Downtown Minneapolis Projects
Looks like a lovely re-construction of the first floor! too bad they can't get another retail bay in there though. It's weird this building is such an island for being right in the thick of it. It looks so short and incorporated in that historic fire photo!

Re: Current & Proposed Downtown Minneapolis Projects
I've got a list of historic downtown buildings that I'd love to see blessed with some TLC. The Lakeland Building is on it. For those who care, I'll post my list under Downtown Minneapolis - General Topics.
I'd be interested in information about what y'all think should be added to this list as well as comments on the ones I've jotted down.

I was just looking at the Old flour Exchange wondering who in their bleeping mind thought it was a good idea to paint the brick & terracotta green. Oi. Add that to the list...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis - General Topics
Here's my list of historic downtown buildings that could use lots of TLC:
--21 3rd St N, 1919. This is the Lakeland Building, the post about which spurred me to send out this list.
--200 Washington Ave. N, 1879. There were big plans for renovating this building as part of a whole-block project proposed at the height of the condo boom. Nothing since then.
--300 Washington Ave. N, 1897. The Jackson Building is on the National Historic Register. I've heard that plans to renovate this into an Iron Horse hotel have fallen through.
--506 Washington Ave. N, 1916. This two-story building is used by Duffy Paper. It's nice, and with the windows opened up could be a real asset to the neighborhood.
--608 3rd St. N, 1918. Falk Paper is still working out of this one, and it appears to be in very good shape. I'm not so much worrying about the burly building's fate as I am thinking that, given the neighborhood, the day will come when a new use brings out its beauty.
--125 1st St. N, 1884. This is the one with the canted chimney out back. I get the feeling the owner is hoping the building will fall down so he can put up something else. I hope I'm wrong.
--314 1st Ave. Ave. N, 1886. I've often wondered why no one's come up with something for this attractive little building right in the heart of the entertainment district.
--118 4th St. N., 1899. The white brick building next door that used to house the New French Cafe might be too far gone to save. If that one goes down, this building, which is nicer, shouldn't suffer the same fate.
--614 15th St. E, 1898. All the buildings listed above are in the Warehouse District. This little church is in Elliott Park. Its soul might be beyond redemption, which would be a pity.
I'd love to learn more about these buildings, hear about any plans for them, and see buildings added to this list.

614 15th St. E is listed on the National Register and is currently for sale IIRC. It's always fascinated me.
200 Washington is a John Rimarcik holding. When he does move on his properties, he does a fantastic job with them. Be patient.
One of my architecture studios involved painting watercolors of 118 4th St N. There are some awesome studios upstairs that have held many parties over the years.

Excellent! I've loved this building ever since I lived in the North Loop. This is the way historic restoration of commercial properties should be done.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis - General Topics
Has anybody done a decent 3-D layout/rendering/massing for the 4th and Marquette block with the Nic/Xcel/4Marq? If so, do you have a link?
