The HERC just spent a bit of money to improve their loading bays to handle trucks so they wouldn't idle outside and improve smell control in the facility. Stinky trucks are just part of the program until they are in the negative air zone inside the facility.

This got DEED cleanup funding as well:

Also, it is apparently to be called "The Natural."

City of Minneapolis, The Natural, $151,367

The city of Minneapolis is awarded $151,367 in cleanup funds for this 0.39-acre site contaminated with gasoline range organics, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals. Previous uses on the site include a junkyard, gas station and auto repair. It will be redeveloped into a six-story mixed-use building offering 4,181 square feet of commercial space and 78 market-rate apartments. The new development will create 10 jobs, increase the tax base by $231,024 and leverage about $11.5 million in private investment. Remaining cleanup costs will be paid by the developer.
I took a tour of Lyndale Plaza (Richfield) today. This is being done by the same development team. Lyndale Plaza looks great...they went above and beyond what they had to do for that area, considering what it was replacing. I don't doubt they will do a great job on this project as well. They seem committed to doing high quality infill with proximity to transit (and committed to soaking up subsidies, natch)

I agree that Lyndale Plaza looks pretty good. Hopefully this lives up to it.

They have started demolition on this site.

Thread title should be changed to "The Natural" I guess. Sigh.

I'm confused where exactly this is... What is going to be replaced? Shapco is 524 5th, Fulton is 414 6th Ave, just the empty corner seems too small.

It's going to be L-shaped, wrapping around Fulton and butting up against the overpass. Still small though, given the size of most construction lately.

Thanks, I just looked back at the 1st page and found the .pdf with the site plan. It's definitely squeezed in there!

It's amazing how derelict this area was just a couple years ago: http://goo.gl/maps/4qqjz

That Holiday Station is pretty new too...the site was vacant (or post-demo) in 2009 for that Street View image.

I think it's very safe to say that this particular development would not be happening without the public investment in The Interchange. Target Field is pretty to look at, but look how shitty the area is without the roadway improvements and partial screening of the HERC that The Interchange will provide. The Ford Center used to look pretty rough as well, and there's no way that rehab would've happened (yet, anyways) without Target Field.

I wonder if there are any plans to bury the power lines pictured in the google map shot?

The rest of 5th is still pretty bad. It'll be interesting to see if it turns over with all the new residents.

Not really the place to share this, but has anyone ever seen this random little house surrounded by the raw, industrious North Loop? I stumbled upon it last summer while doing some video work.

So just to be sure...they have started demo on this one by Fulton...and not the one that is supposed to start soon across the street behind the Holiday that is the Trammell Crow project?
