There is supposed to be a connection to Xcel across 4th and then over to the library. I don't know about a connection to the potential tower this will share a the block with.

I found the plans a few pages back...http://minneapolismn.gov/www/groups/pub ... 148254.pdf

They never really show this side in the renderings. Only once where each side is shown straight on. What is happening looks unfinished, like it will be covered up immediately. I wonder if there is something in the works for the north half, phase 2?

Every time I go by this I think how much better it already is looking than Nic on Fifth. That podium is just so awful. This one will actually have glass sections, and the pre cast looks much higher quality (even if it isn't). I mean I guess Nic on Fifth isn't much to beat, but I think this one will be MUCH better.

PS, I hope the alley between this and whatever is built to the north isn't as wide as on the Xcel/Nic on fifth block...because yeah, that blank wall will look bad.

Yeah - I went by yesterday and that north wall is bleak. I think there was a condition on the approval regarding the north side wall. Was there an actual redesign as a result? Or did they get a variance?

3. The north elevation shall be revised to eliminate all instances of blank wall in excess of 25
feet and to more closely match the appearance and proposed materials of the south and
east elevations, in compliance with Section 530.120 and Section 551.930 of the zoning code.

Found the below excerpt in the main packet sent to the city. It appears we'll have to wait until phase II for the skyway connection to the library. I'm curious, if they were to get things moving quickly with phase II could they use the same crane?

"The site has been identified as a key redevelopment site by the Downtown 2025 Plan and in the North
Nicollet Mall Development Objectives. Additionally, the Downtown 2010 Plan states, “The Minneapolis
Public Library shall be connected by skyways to the office/retail core.” The library was constructed, with
significant public investment, to accommodate a skyway connection across Nicollet Mall to this site. As
noted above, the subject building does not line up with the portion of the library that is designed to
accommodate skyway access across Nicollet Mall and as such, no connection is proposed. A skyway
connection to the library would be expected as part of a future phase on the north side of the block.
The applicant submitted an EAW for the entire block as it would be required in the event that they
acquire the north portion of the block in the future. The applicant is strongly encouraged to work with
Hennepin County on a skyway connection to the library for Phase 2 if and when they secure ownership
of that piece."

Above statement is false. City pushed back and the developer is building the skyway lobby that will be able to connect to the Library in phase 1. It's possible the skyway to the Library won't happen until Gateway is underway for obvious reasons (funding & no pressing need given corridor is not fully developed)

This is already turning out to have a little less glass and a little more pre-cast than the renderings on the side of the building towards Nic....Also the balcony railings are iron, and not glass as shown in the renderings.

I presume they'll have to raise the crane? It seems like they will have to do that for the Hub at the U of M, but that crane is in the middle of the building so I don't understand how they will raise it. I guess I'm curious about the construction techniques.

I think it's just the angle of the photo, the yellow crane is on the outer edge of the building on the side where the surface parking lot is, so adding height will be relatively easy

I think they typically add the sections to raise the crane right below the top section. So even if it was in the middle of the building, it would be very easy.

Is the Library going to be connected by skyway as well?

Eventually, but not to this building. As I understand it, the library will connect to whatever building Opus ends up building on the other half of this block, and to the Gateway Tower, if UP ever manages to build it.

Looks like they'll raise the crane soon. There are additional sections sitting at the base this morning.

Was pretty surprised to see them actively working on this at 10pm tonight. The crane was hauling up a big chunk of the siding as I drove by.

It's probably much easier for them to take deliveries of large elements like this when traffic downtown isn't a mess.
