Shoulda been at least 125 stories taller. If you're not going for the world record, what's the point?

Make it 1 mile high! Let's be the first city to throw money at this guy to get it! Halt construction of LPM, it's the perfect site. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/06/ ... 2620130618

They're going to have to raise that crane up, aren't they? It doesn't look very high.

It was discussed previously, but this is a self-raising crane. It can't be too much taller than the building under construction because (1) it would actually make it more difficult to operate and (2) it needs to brace itself off of the building.

Yup, I'm aware of how they work. I've seen the Youtube videos :) was just hoping that the crane wasn't already at final height.

Any updates or guesses on what could go in the retail space?

Love that ^ picture ^ . Really shows the density. Could use a few more tallies. Start with that massive parking lot right in the middle.

We've established that parking lot is for a school and probably not going anywhere. I like the density too though, and would like to see more 8-15 story structures in addition to the 25+ floor towers others love so much. I think what makes Loring Park so neat is the variety of buildings.

I'll be interested to see. For as dense as this area is, it's curiously under-served by retail. I know it's probably not doable because of ADA, but I'd love to see some of the garden level spaces in the old apartment buildings re-purposed for small scale retail.

Sorry about the "we've established bit" Not sure if I had read the group report or anything. I know what it is thank you. Now getting off the ground from the slapping I received, I think the city would be wise to perhaps give the land to a developer who in turn would build another highrise with a ramp and/or underground parking and allow for those school employees to have free access in return for the property. The city would still make a massive amount of money from property taxes.

It wasn't meant to be a "slapping", so I apologize if it came off that way. I just thought I'd remind you (and anybody else) what was already talked about (a few months ago) and why that lot is vacant and may not be buildable for quite some time.

I think that lot could easily be transformed into something close to what you are describing though. I may personally prefer to see something a bit smaller in scale though -- something that would cast an all-day shadow over the school and the kids' playground. Maybe 8-12 floors, but skinny.

Part of that vacant lot is also used by the school kids for recess. Until that school goes away, and it is one of the top school in MPLS, so I don't think that will happen too soon.

Just to be clear, the school system is not run by the city, it's run by a separate organization (Special School District #1, aka Minneapolis Public Schools) that has a very particular agenda -- doing their best to educate kids. They don't have much motivation to sell off their land, especially if it's of some use to them, since they don't pay property taxes and have very low carrying costs.

Unfortunate they don't consider the leveraged buyout playbook.... I'm sure some financiers would consider offering them a sell-leaseback arrangement for their operating capital.

They must lease the spots out in the summer or something-- typically about 60% of that lot is used for recess and only about 40% for parking. It would be nice to tear up that lot, but for a soccer or baseball field, not for a tower. There are plenty of other spaces to add density other than this lot.
