I'm really just hoping they let NB passengers get off onto it, so I don't have to cross the tracks when I'm going to catch the 18.

seriously, I know there's paid fare zones and stuff, but is that continuous railing really necessary to separate the sidewalk from the platform?

Imagine Government Center station with fencing everywhere...

No other major city with light rail has the 'safety' precautions we have here. From having the rail run on the other side of a concrete bump, to the railings and gates and bells and horns and alarms and beeps and clangs and toots.
It's the Minnesota Way - Nanny State. Like it or not, it won't change. No matter how well other places do it more quietly, more efficiently, more streamlined.

And people still seem to drive or walk right in front of them and get smucked.

I don't think that's the correct reasoning. If we do so much for safety we should have the almost perfect line. We have had upwards or 20 accidents and even though a lot of fault goes to people's stupidity, the safety was not as good as it should be.

Denver's Light Rail sounds exactly the same... tooting and clanging on every block. The accidents are all the fault of the "victim" - the woman who stepped in front of the Green line had her headphones on - very stupid... I'd say this is Darwin Level Stupid. The real truth is that woman was severely depressed and it is very likely that she stepped in front on purpose. LRT is a train, just like any other big train - except it goes through very dense urban high traffic high pedestrian zones and rules and safety cannot be taken too lightly. It might be annoying but people complain about the noise and they complain about the accidents.... let it go... move on.

The comparison is NOT even close. Denver, Portland, San Deigo, DC, Seattle, San Jose, San Francisco... I've been on all of their light rail trains - in very dense or downtown areas. None of them has the warning alarms, bells, dings, clangs, toots, horns, whistles, etc. that we have here. It actually makes me laugh. I honestly don't let it concern me much anymore - it's the way Metro Transit wants to operate their trains. I live a block from a station. I can hear the trains for blocks - but like the airport, I don't mind the noise (which I also live near). In fact, when the winds are out of the south - I can hear the horns from the trains traveling along 34th Ave S., along the stretch south of Terminal 2!

Anyhow, I believe that's why this building has all the extra railings. They don't want a lawsuit from when there are hordes of people downtown and somebody doesn't look. So openness and street presence is the sacrifice.

If you have ever heard or read at the Lake street station, the platforms are for paid people only. I think this is part of reasoning for the separation of the platform and the sidewalk. Too bad they were not able to get at least a mid block connection to the sidewalk. There might have been some ADA issues with that due to the raised platform and the limited space for steps and ramps at mid block.

But the Lake Street Station is on a bridge in the air over the street. And there are plenty of steps at Government Center Station, with ADA ramps for HC and City buildings on the sides. Not sure why it would be any different here if they just had a continuous step.
