RBC Plaza (former Gaviidae II)
Re: RBC Plaza (former Gaviidae II)
Walked by the Subway today and they are getting close, but I doubt they will make their Dec 2015 opening unless it is in between Christmas and New Years. There is still stuff to get finished up.

^Really? I generally hate Subway since I'm a meat-eater and their meat is low quality, but the smell from the baking bread is fantastic (to me).

That would be nice. The near-total lack of places to eat anything after 5pm that isn't a sit-down restaurant makes downtown suck. When I think of what would make downtown better, it isn't another department store. It is street level quick-service restaurants. You know things are bad when the only one that comes to mind is the Arby's on Marquette, which closes at like 8pm. There's also that Chipotle somewhere on Nicollet but it's too far south and feels kind of invisible. Bring on the chains, please!

Interesting. My wife and I were discussing this just last night and I couldn't agree more. Having lived downtown for more than 2 years now the three things that are still in short supply are eateries that are open in the evening and cost less than $50 for a couple, a reasonably priced full-service grocery, and a movie theater. Overall we've been delighted with how far the area has come from a residential standpoint, but as more housing gets established there really needs to be more food and entertainment options for the middle-income crowd. That would be nice. "meaty oaker"? Is that a bit of tongue-in-cheek to describe a burger joint?

St. Anthony Main is one of our favorite theaters!Having lived downtown for more than 2 years now the three things that are still in short supply are eateries that are open in the evening and cost less than $50 for a couple, a reasonably priced full-service grocery, and a movie theater.

I'm very fond of it as well, actually. Evelia (the S.O.) and I probably patronized them about 2-3 times a month in 2015 when it's pleasant enough to walk. Still, If there were a few state-of-the-art screens downtown and skyway connected to the new residences going in, I suspect they would do ok.

What happened to the Block E theater, exactly? Did it actually fail or was it forced out to make way for the theoretical casino? If the latter, I'd also very much like to see another multiplex open up in WeDo. St. Anthony Main is great, but four screens isn't really enough.

I thought they were kinda forced out before their lease was through. Someone I knew who worked there said the lease wasn't up until 2015 or 16 or something like that.

Re: the Block E theaters. We've discussed this at some length on a few occasions. If you went to the movies at Block E, it was pretty clear that it was not a thriving enterprise. They were forced out because under the terms of their lease, they were effectively paying no rent (rent was based on revenue, and since their revenue was so low, it was nothing). From the theater's point of view, they didn't want to leave because they could make money as long as they weren't paying any rent. From the landlord's point of view, it's pretty obvious why they wanted them out of there.

Re: RBC Plaza (former Gaviidae II)
I locked Block E back when you could get dinner and a movie (granted, dinner at Applebees, but still) and then some ice cream or a cookie afterwards. All easily accessible by train for me. Saint Anthony Main is overall a better experience, but a little harder to get to (no transit, but parking is pretty cheap and easy).
I guess these days I could take the train to MOA for movies, but, you know, MOA.

It would only be three or four stops by streetcar.Saint Anthony Main is overall a better experience, but a little harder to get to (no transit, but parking is pretty cheap and easy).

Or just hop on one of the MANY bus routes that go that way. The downtown fare zone even stretches across the river one stop.It would only be three or four stops by streetcar.Saint Anthony Main is overall a better experience, but a little harder to get to (no transit, but parking is pretty cheap and easy).
