PTACs are less efficient...
Is this true? Aren't PTACs and Magic-Paks doing exactly the same thing, mechanically? Just a compressor and a fan (and a little tiny gas furnace, in our climate).
Add a condensing coil and a evaporator coil and that is basically a PTAC, for Single Package Vertical units also includes a heat exchanger, and a media air filter and a separated supply and return.
It depends on what models are installed, based on sales data, high efficiency Single Package Vertical units are much more common than high efficiency PTACs. PTACs only use resistance electric heat (save for two manufacturers), which is less efficient than gas heating. Single Package Vertical units in this market usually come with gas heating, but not always.
