Has anyone looked into an underpass/tunnel option? This option would also allow for direct access to the parking garage that's built there. I'm sure it would be more expensive than the pedestrian bridge, but it wouldn't be ugly as sin.
You are right on both counts.

Does a center platform here solve any of the issues that this stupid bridge is trying to solve?

Also, what would it cost to convert this to a center platform?

Ah yes. You make an excellent point. :-)

But seriously, last year there was only one game in which people left early in droves. I think more often than not, it’s going to be mass hysteria coming through those huge doors.
Like Target Field. There is a main entrance to the stadium, but there will still be secondary entrances and exits at the corners of the stadium. I know of at least two entrances to Target Field that I don't have to deal with the lines and waits because I'm not going in the main entrance. IF I have Viking seats on the 11th Street end of the stadium, I'm sure not going to walk to Chicago, then have to walk thru a crowd of people in the stadium concourse, to get back to the opposite end of the stadium. There are several sets of door to the stadium. So there will be less mass exodus than one would think once they understand there are easier ways in and out and closer, shorter walks to their seats.

And seriously, how big of a deal is it if there's a slight wait to get onto the LRT for a half hour twelve times a year? Not a big deal. They still queue crowds away from the platform, presumably for safety to avoid crush loads on a platform pushing people onto the tracks. So this bridge will just mean crowds will have to wait on a bridge rather than somewhere on the stadium side of Chicago waiting to cross. Worthless.

That's why it's so expensive, it will have all that dead load of people waiting on it.

People aren't a dead load, they're a live load.

If they're standing there for half an hour waiting for a train they might as well be dead load
(I know I know...)

I think we can all agree that delaying the bridge long enough that it doubles in cost and then getting the Vikings to pay for half would be the best possible outcome here.

The Commons presenter is being very careful to point out the pedestrian bridge that has been added to all her renderings. Which maybe doesn't mean anything...

I think they know that if they don't spring for at least half, they will get nothing with the sentiment that is out there in public relations land. Don't see Met Council springing for the whole cost with the cost going up with the SWLRT and they will need all the money they have for that or the blue line extension.

Why don't they just build a giant conveyor belt ramp like you see next to a plane's luggage hold at the airport? Game-goers could waddle/stumble up to it, a Vikings Handler tosses them onto the moving belt, and up and into the stadium they go. /snark

The pedestrian bridge will be 30 feet wide and include a second elevator bank, with the team ponying up for any additional design costs associated with the structure’s width.
So does this make the below post null?

The timing of this announcement is curious. You'd think they'd want to do announce this earlier in the week to get more attention, so the fact that they hid this right before the Fourth of July weekend implies that the Vikings know it's still stupid.

That would make sense. They're greedy, but not dumb.

Well, halfway there, except that the Met Council is trading half of Downtown East Station's ad revenue for the next 30 years for the cash. So...is it really a deal?

Met Council approved the bridge yesterday. It will cost $7mil due to design modifications and the Vikings are still paying half. Nice to see this moving forward!

Damn. I had planned to email my Met Council members in opposition again. Not that it would have made a difference.
