I've long thought that 5th should be closed between US Bank Stadium and Target Field to all cars, with the exception of those entering or exiting a ramp. In those situations you only allow access to the garage from the nearest ave. Add bike lanes, a bunch of great trees encourage sidewalk cafes, etc. It would be a great way to connect one end of downtown to the other and be a great additional amenity downtown

Mpls hasn't really been strategic in trying to move towards that vision. For example, the lane on the south side of the street between Park and 4th Ave could have easily been removed if:
1. Mpls worked with the Armory to change loading dock access (those flanking garages) to Portland and 5th. And eliminate the parking garage thing.
2. Mpls could have reconfigured the access/egress from their old ramp to 5th Ave prior to doing their parking ramp swap. Also would have been great to make the ramp suck less in general.
That's it!

Tangential connection with The Commons but I drove through downtown at around 2:30 taking 4th from 394 to West Bank. When I came up to the three blocks along The Commons I counted no less than five vehicles stopped in the bike lane on the left side of 4th.

It’s a major lost opportunity that the bike route on those three blocks didn’t get the separated treatment that Park and Portland had gotten through these blocks.

What were they thinking?

Three lanes of one-way vehicle traffic towards 35W!

Judge ruled the arrangement between the city and park board can’t stand.

I can’t even follow what’s going on anymore with this, or what possible other options are available.

Seems pretty clear, call it the Prince Remembrance Garden and the city should be in the clear.

That would have to be at least across the river to get away with that.
