1016 Marquette / Realestate Recycling Office Building

Postby Aville_37 » August 28th, 2012, 5:05 am

Don't think there is a thread for this yet:

Looks pretty cool. With the pedestal design, don't know if it will really liven up the street, but may offer opportunities for sidewalk cafes, unobstructed views of the surrounding area. I am not an architect nor have any formal studies in design, but I like James Dayton for his forward thinking, out of the box designs. Postmodern / minimalism?

It's neat but was this the site of one of the next potential supertalls? I tought there were only a handful -- one being the Powers Block on Nicollet that we can scratch now -- and that there was also one on Marquette near 10th.

No. That's a block over. This lot is tiny.

Are you thinking of the spot where they were going to build "The Nicollet"?

It's a tiny lot and this is a very eye-catching design. I hope it gets built but I am curious to learn more about how the roof will be used.

This awesome proposal just goes to show how a small infill building can have architectural punch. I walked by that site recently and noticed a "for sale" sign. I'm wondering if this might be a dead project? :(

Cool looking building. If I remember correctly, the previous proposal at this site had a cool design as well. Hope it happens!

Yeah, the last proposal was similar, or at least we had something up on the old thread about it. I too hope this thing goes up because cutting edge design on small scale projects will continue to push the city in the direction that i believe most of us here are desiring.

Totally! Our city is fairly pretty to look at, it should be just as dynamic on the street, I love turning a corner in a city and finding little gems like this.

This would be the perfect building for this site. Would have this dynamic yet complementary contrast with the historic Handicraft Building, and work well with the scale of Orchestra Hall and WCCO building. It's fun to have a little quirkiness on the street level like you decribed above. That's what makes cities like San Francisco or Barcelona so unique and have such strong personalities.

As far as I know, this has been cancelled and the lot is now a part of a Village Green apartment development.

Well if they still have plans for building, maybe they can build a similar style building in another location.

A bummer that this probably won't get built, however, its nice to see residential development in the very core of downtown. My main hope is they retain some of the street level retail in The Handicraft Building. It would love to see this office project resurface somewhere else downtown.

Perhaps the former ArtSpace lot on Washington Ave...

I'm happy this didn't get built. Sure, the drawing looks kind of cute, especially the red cubes and the green roof. However, that space underneath is parking, and I haven't yet seen a building that can keep that sort of space looking anything but gloomy. We already have two examples in downtown: that energy dealybob just south of Target Center and Century Bank at 1st Ave. N. and Washington Ave.

I would dread seeing a larger version of this on the former ArtSpace lot, where a lively street presence is sorely needed.
