Why all the angst in this thread? I don't get it. Ripping on the U, the Vikings, and fans in general. While I realize some people are not football fans, trying to tear down those of us that are and making up stats is sad and pathetic.

I'll agree with this. And seriously, seat counts? It's a business decision based on how they want to anchor supply to demand, it's not a unit-size war.

I couldn't agree more.. I like the fact that the gophers stadium in Minneapolis is the smallest in the big 10 and possibly the smallest D1 stadium in the country. I hope the Vikings stadium has the least seats too. I think it's fitting for a city that's always settling for less- wisely perhaps, or just tradition or both.

It's Minneapolis.. They go MINNE on everything. I bet they shrink the seats from 64,500 to 60,000 before it's all said and done. Don't the gophers have the smallest stadium in the big 10? ..It's Minneapolis.

30,000 more seats that wouldn't be used, mind you. The Bank only sells out for games that draw a large number of fan from the opposing team as well as Gopher fans. (Wisconsin, Nebraska). If anything, it should have been a little smaller.

Indeed. I had student season tickets the first two years the Bank was open, and there were always empty seats, even on some of the "bigger" games. I don't see a reason to add seats that will never fill...that's just more money taxpayers would have to shell out.

How did this thread turn into almost two pages of ill informed posts? A basic Wiki or Google search or even reading this entire thread will answer what ever Q you might have. The new Vikings stadium will have a larger capacity! A simple search finds that in the 30 years of Metrodome football they in fact increased capacity. Following that trend the new Vikings stadium will have 65,000 seats. That number is higher then what the Metrodome holds.

Why use correct facts and figures when I can pick whatever baseless assumption out of the air to prove my particular viewpoint?

not to mention that the trend, across the country, has been for people to stay at home and watch NFL games. They are suited for viewing on your own TV in your own living room. College football is different... especially in smaller towns where it's the only thing happening on a Saturday. You can easily fill an 80,000 seat stadium with people and college residences from a town of less than half a million.

At the risk of prolonging an unnecessary conversation, how is any of the above tearing down anyone? I just spent a bit under a grand to renew my football season tickets and I'm not sure how you're possibly offended.

Heh. I *really* wasn't trying to make a big deal out of the seating thing. It was more of a joke/sarcastic observation than anything. I mean, the question, "doesn't this seem small?," struck this major Div. I football school alumn as quite amusing.

It's going to be a beautiful stadium that will serve a good purpose for years to come. It has the design that has potential to become historic.

Those pictures bring in to context just how big the footprint is for this project.

They have the base for a 3rd stationary crane in place now and have started assembling platforms for the first flooring sections on-site.

I think this would be brilliant and pay homage to the mascot, because when Vikings died in battle, they went to Valhalla. Only the best warriors were allowed to enter.

Valhalla is also the name of a commonly used methadone clinic in the twin cities. Only reason I know that is I work for an insurance company in our state public programs department.

Only if you were to convince a major banking institution to change their name to "Valhalla Financial Services".
